U13 Girls Semi Final & Finals Day - Kinawley Claim Title After Extra Time

Box Score

Nov. 4, 2017

What a day of thrills and spills in Lisnaskea as our U13 Girls were moments from being crowned Division 1 Champions. Kinawley staged a late rally to draw the game before they went on to claim the title after 2 periods of extra time. Belcoo had secured their place in the final with a 2-12 to 0-3 win over Lisnaskea earlier in the day while Kinawley got past Enniskillen Gaels on a 4-7 to 1-1 scoreline.

Our girls once more were a credit to themselves as they produced two fabulous displays on the day, working tremendously hard, battling for every ball, brave as lions blocking ball and thwarting physically stronger opponents while moving the ball superbly upfield as they carved out opportunities to kick some fine scores.

Back Row (L-R) Eimear Magee, Niamh McAloon, Sinead Barrett, Sam Martin, Cara Gray, Mikayla Maguire, Ciara Nolan, Rhianne McGuinness.

Front Row (L-R) Scarlett O'Connor, Siofra McAloon, Riona Keaney, Eve Barrett, Eimear Gray, Caitlyn Nolan, Ciara McGuinness. Missing Lisa Lavery.

Semi Final v Lisnaskea:

Belcoo would play some great stuff in the Semi Final win over Lisnaskea as they powered into the Final. From the throw in they took control and their bright opening seen two early scores on the board. Sam Martin drove forward from wing back and fed Sinead Barrett who split the posts while Sinead then forced a Lisnaskea defender to overcarry the ball, she took a quick free to Scarlett O’Connor who fired over her first point of the game.

There were early blocks by Cara Gray and Mikayla Maguire in defence, Cara was particularly impressive in this encounter, strong in the tackle and first to several 50/50 balls, her hunger evident for all to see. Belcoo added a third point on 8minutes, Riona Keaney’s kickout to the wing was picked up by Gray who kicked it down the right wing to Eve Barrett, she beat her player and slipped the ball into Scarlett O’Connor for another well taken score.

Lisnaskea were to respond with a point but they were having very little joy going forward. The excellent Siofra McAloon was sharply out in front to claim ball ahead of her player, showing a good first touch to set her side on the way forward again with Rhianne McGuinness doing likewise on the other side of the field.

A fine bit of one-two play through the hands by Sinead Barrett and Sam Martin seen Barrett knock over a point on 10minutes before Belcoo registered their first goal. Ciara Nolan and Scarlett O’Connor combined, O’Connor’s shot hit the crossbar with Eve Barrett quickest to react as she fired into the net.

Sinead Barrett quickly followed up with a point from play after Eimear Gray swooped on a break ball while Mikayla Maguire slotted over a well hit 45. Belcoo were in full flight at this time, Eve Barrett was fouled moments later and Maguire again split the post from a free while Sinead Barrett slotted another when Cara Gray and O’Connor had linked well. Half time 1-8 to 0-1.

Scarlett O’Connor extended the advantage early in the second period after good work in the middle from Niamh McAloon, who got on a lot of ball and used it well. Belcoo were to hit a second goal to end the tie as a contest, Eimear Magee fastening onto a loose ball on the ground and rifling a soccer style shot into the top left hand corner of the net, a serious finish.

Lisnaskea would knock over two quick points but Belcoo finished on top. Ciara McGuinness, Caitlyn Nolan and Lisa Lavery were all added to the forward line early in the second half and all added great value to the side, winning and slipping the ball off to onrushing players. Sinead Barrett added her fifth point of the game before Lisa Lavery fielded a great high ball and fed Scarlett O’Connor for her fifth. O’Connor would complete the scoring with a final point to see Belcoo into the Final 2-12 to 0-3 winners.

Final v Kinawley:

It was an engrossing final, 27seconds on the clock, Belcoo had themselves ahead, Niamh McAloon looping round Sinead Barrett to point. It was the first period of extra time before Belcoo ever trailed.

The work rate was immense, the ball was being used cleverly coming upfield and the O’Rahilly’s were winning the early battles. Kinawley did tie matters on 4minutes before Belcoo were to net a first goal in the fifth minute when Eimear Magee drilled a crisp shot to the net.

Sinead Barrett powers past three Kinawley defenders

Sinead Barrett was everywhere on the field, foraging to claim loose balls, dispossessing opponents and driving Belcoo forward. Sam Martin too was seeing an enormous amount of the ball on the right wing with Niamh McAloon, Rhianne McGuinness and Mikayla Maguire all reading the game well and finding sky blue jerseys when in possession.

Ciara McGuinness would be fouled on 8minutes and Mikayla Maguire kicked a good free from out on the right for 1-2 to 0-1. Kinawley’s full forward hit a fine score after a great passage of play. It was nip and tuck, the effort, workrate and hunger of all players on both teams was clear to be seen. No quarter asked or given, no challenge shirked, it was a serious high quality encounter. Half time: Belcoo 1-2 v 0-2 Kinawley.

Belcoo had a great start to the second half, on the front foot again and moving forward well, pinning Kinawley back. Sinead Barrett had a point on the scoreboard inside 60seconds while Eve Barrett was to rattle a goal three minutes into the half for a five point cushion 2-3 (7) to 0-2.

Other chances were squandered, efforts just going narrowly wide, it was a period of dominance from Belcoo that didn’t yield enough scores in the end.

There wasn’t actually a score at either end until Kinawley rattled the net with five minutes to play. They had began to take control in all sectors and the pressure eventually told with a goal, it was a whirlwind few minutes, Kinawley hit two quick points and were in for a game winning goal but a superb and very brave save from Riona Keaney kept Belcoo ahead by a point.

Kinawley though hit a free to level the game. 2-3 (7) to 1-5 (7) with a minute to play. Belcoo, who had been under the cosh for a sustained period, broke out. Sam Martin, Niamh McAloon and Sinead Barrett carrying the ball upfield, a 45 was awarded. Mikayla Maguire took what was the games final kick, the effort dropping short and the full time whistle went. Draw game, extra time required. Time to draw breath.

It was to be Kinawley’s day in extra time. They hit two points in the first period. Belcoo going close for a goal with Eimear Magee but the ball didn’t just fall for them. The second period seen Kinawley register an early goal. Belcoo battled to the finish with all they had left. Kinawley though, winners by 5 in the end.

Sinead Barrett receives the Player of the Match Award from Fermanagh Ladies Chairperson Ann McGrath after the game.

It was a brilliant day and the final was a tremendous advertisement for Girls football. Our girls should be extremely proud of their efforts not just today but throughout the season. Big strides forward have been taken. We will go again in the new year.
