Juniors: Derrygonnelly 2-9 Belcoo 0-10
May. 29, 2010
The Juniors suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Derrygonnelly on Saturday evening. Belcoo will wonder how this one got away from them having dominanted possession for large periods of the game and at the interval they held a four point lead having restricted the home side to just two points. Unfortunately Belcoo were unhinged by two goals in the space of 6 minutes midway through the second half which allowed Derrygonnelly to run out winners by 5points.
Nevan Higgins fired over the first score of the game from an acute angle after a few seconds but it was to take 10minutes for another score to be registered. Belcoo were on top during this period but found scores hard to come by. Nevan Higgins was showing well for ball in the forwards and with Ryan McGovern, Declan Leonard and Eoin Leonard sweeping up everything defensive, Derrygonnelly found it diffcult to get the ball worked into a scoreable position.
Mark McGovern pointed in the 11th minute before Sean McNulty registered twice, one from play and a free kick. Gavin Leonard was the next to fire over as Belcoo led 0-5 to 0-0 after 22minutes. Sean Meehan did open Derrygonnelly's account on 23minutes and the same player was to register a free kick after 26minutes but it was Belcoo who were to get the last score of the opening period through Sean McNulty. Going in at the break Belcoo led 0-6 to 0-2.
Derrygonnelly came out in the second half an within 8minutes they had kicked 5points to really make a game of it. Damian Dundas, Rory McGrath, Sean Meehan and two Anthony Maguire free kicks had got Derrygonnelly back into the game. Belcoo substitute Christopher Leonard had kicked two points inbetween the Derrygonnelly scores to leave Belcoo in front by 0-8 to 0-7.
Christopher Leonard and Anthony Maguire traded free kicks before Derrgonnelly took the lead for the first time in the game. Two quickfire goals the first from Damian Dundas who fisted to the net following a high ball into the box from Gerard Meehan. An excellent Sean Meehan point from an almost impossible angle was followed by the second goal. Gerard Meehan's shot deflected of Ryan McGovern leaving Belcoo goalkeeper Aidan Leonard stranded as the ball found the back of the net.
Trailing 2-9 to 0-9 with 5miutes remaining Belcoo pressed forward but some good defending prevented them from getting the goal they required. Mark McGovern, Paddy Burns and Ian Corrigan all had half chances with the latter pointing when going for goal. Gavin Leonard was then foulded for a penalty with 2minutes remaining, Christopher Leonard stepped up but his spot kick was saved by the feet of goalkeeper Damian McGovern and Derrygonnelly held on to collect their second victory of the season.
