Understrength Belcoo Minors Hold Out For The Win
Apr. 9, 2018
MINORS GROUP 2B: Erne Gaels (Belleek) 3.05 Belcoo 3.11
Belcoo fielded a young inexperienced team with 6 minor debutants among the first 13 including 5 under 15s. Belcoo were without a number of key players including the pacey Ronan Maguire and our senior panellist, Ciaran Flanagan.
Belcoo played the first half with the advantage of the wind. Belcoo got off to the best possible start with a long range effort from Conor McAloon floating into the top of the net for the opening goal of the game. Belcoo continued to apply the pressure and a great pass from Lawrence McKeown put young Patrick Martin in for a really good point. Dermot Burns and Mark Ferguson were operating well in the forward line and a slick move by both players found Shane Doherty free and he converted for another point.
The midfield pairing of McAloon and McKeown were completely dominant in the first half and created waves and waves of attacks. McKeown producing a run and slipping the ball to Burns who cleverly slotted the ball into the top left hand corner of the net for Belcoo's second goal. McKeown won another ball in midfield and passed to McAloon and he delivered another long range point. McKeown scored 2 long range points from play.
Erne Gaels scored their only point in the half after 17 minutes but all other attacks were quickly broken down by the brilliant Belcoo defence of Oisin leonard, Oisin O'Loughlin, Emmett McGuinness and Oran McCann. Next it was the pacey Cormac McHugh who was the key link between defence and forward line and he gave an excellent pass to Burns who made no mistake for another point. McAloon and Burns added points for the visitors after good work from Marc Stewart and Gerry Nolan.
The final score of the half from Belcoo was started by McCann in defence and he played the ball to Doherty and he give a delightful ball into Burns who converted his second goal of the evening. The home side were getting nothing from the Belcoo defence and blocks from McGuinness and McCann ensuring Belcoo had a comfortable lead at half time. Erne Gaels 0.01 Belcoo 3.08.
In the second half Belcoo played from right to left and at this stage there was a gale blowing in favour of Belleek. Belcoo employed a sweeper and this kept the game scoreless for the next 10 minutes with young Ben McNulty in nets coming out and collecting a couple of balls to deny the Belleek forwards.
However, as the young O'Rahillys started to tire, Belleek got back into he match with 2 goals and 1 point. Belcoo settled again and score 3 points from McAloon, Burns and McKeown. Belcoo squandered a couple of good chances to close out the game. McCann produced another remarkable block. Belcoo lost their shape and conceded a further goal and 2 points. At the final whistle it was Erne Gaels 3.05 Belcoo 3.11.
The Belcoo management and players were happy to have got the win but will welcome key players back for the top of group 2 clash with Newtownbutler on Wednesday evening. Emmett McGuinness and Oisin O'Loughlin will have been delighted with their minor debuts and will be hoping to retain their places in the team for round 2.
