U16 Girls Make Winning Start To League
Apr. 9, 2018
Under 16 Division 3: Irvinestown 6-0 v 5-9 Belcoo
Our Under 16 Girls came from behind on a heavy field in Irvinestown to claim the victory on a 5-9 to 6-0 scoreline in their first competitive fixture of the season this evening. It was a hard slog in tough conditions as the rain pelted down at times but the girls in blue battled on and were rewarded in the end for their endeavours.
The O’Rahilly’s, who are all underage again next year, were quick of the mark with a point inside 90seconds. Rhianne McGuinness turned over the ball in the defensive sector and found Sinead Barrett down the left channel, she drilled a low ball into the corner for Scarlett O’Connor and her cross field pass was gathered and fired over by Ciana McGrath.
Sinead Barrett breaks upfield in this evening encounter
A mazy run by Sinead Barrett seen an effort strike the post while Scarlett O’Connor narrowly fired wide when well placed soon after. The hosts began to grow into the contest but good pressure from Cara Gray denied an effort on target with their first meaningful attack.
Irvinestown though would hit two quick goals as they rattled the net with two unsaveable efforts on 9 and 12minutes. Belcoo though responded immediately. Aine Barrett who seen plenty of the ball as an outlet in the opening half, was out in front to claim as ball down the right wing, she offloaded to sister Sinead who in turn found O’Connor, this time O’Connor’s ball across the penalty area was fisted to the net by Ciana McGrath before McGrath then cleverly fisted her next possession over the bar after some good play by Eve Barrett. 2-0 to 1-2 midway through the opening half.
Scarlett O'Connor & Eve Barrett ensure the Irvinestown defender isn't getting out handy
Irvinestown were continuing to look dangerous when they went forward but Rachel Nolan made a fine block, Mikayla Maguire made an excellent save and Cara Gray was on hand to gather a ball which was about to cross the goal line.
At the other end Belcoo were now making better decisions in the final third of the field. Aoife Keaney grew into the game as an attacking threat having foraged back into the defence to gain possession. She was to thump over a well taken score from distance to level the contest before Sinead Barrett raced in for a point moments later.
Belcoo were to move two clear coming to half time when Sinead Barrett slotted over another point but it was Irvinestown who had the final say as they netted a third goal on the stroke of half time to lead 3-0 to 1-5.
Siofra McAloon brings the ball out of the defense
Belcoo were to emerge much brighter and slicker in the second half. A strong run down the right by Aoife Keaney seen her pick out the lively Scarlett O’Connor who in turn found the fleet footed Eve Barrett who scampered in for a nice point. Belcoo worked hard to pin back the hosts with Niamh McAloon breaking good ball in the middle sector with Aine Barrett first to react to several breaks, one of these yielded a free as Eve Barrett was upended, Sinead Barrett split the posts from the deadball.
Belcoo had now hit the front again but it took good work by Siofra McAloon and Cara Gray to prevent Irvinestown another strike at goal.
Belcoo were to work a great goal of their own as they moved forward at pace, slipping the right pass at the right time before Scarlett O’Connor found the top left corner. Another soon followed as Aine Barrett reacted quickest when most others stood still in the penalty area. Belcoo now going well 3-7 to 3-0.
Rhianne McGuinness clears her lines
Eimear Magee was doing great work with Rhianne McGuinness in the half back line while Sam Martin and Niamh McAloon were getting through a mountain of work in the middle. Irvinestown would rattle a fourth goal to cut the Belcoo lead back to four points.
The O’Rahilly’s responded once more. Riona Keaney was fouled 30metres from goal, the free from Sinead Barrett found the net via the underside of the crossbar. Two minutes later Barrett drilled a low shot to the net to give Belcoo a cushion of ten points but within a few minutes Irvinestown had struck two more goals to leave four between them as the game drew to its conclusion.
Niamh Cullen evades a tackle as she brings her side forward in the closing stages
With Irvinestown pressing hard, Siofra McAloon came out with an important ball in the left corner while Niamh Cullen powered through a few tackles to win a free and ease the pressure. Aoife Keaney found Sinead Barrett on the run from the free and Barrett drove in for another point. Irvinestown has two more efforts at goal but Mikayla Maguire was quickly off her line to block a shot while Rhianne and Ciara McGuinness helped clear the danger on the other occasion. Sinead Barrett would hit one final point to leave Belcoo winners at the finish by 6points on a 5-9 to 6-0 scoreline.
It was a good opening to the campaign after a few good months training. All girls making telling contributions throughout. Training continues Wednesday at 7pm ahead of next Monday nights trip to Lisnaskea.
