Narrow Win For Senior Men In Aughadrumsee
Apr. 25, 2018
Senior Men: Division 2: Aughadrumsee 1-10 v 1-11 Belcoo
The Senior Men made it back to back league wins on Wednesday night when they returned from Aughadrumsee with a one point success on a 1-11 to 1-10 scoreline. The home side rallied from five down at the interval to get within one but Belcoo just about managed to hang on.
It was a desperate evening for football on a pretty dangerous field with water laying throughout it, player unable to remain on their feet as darkness descended quickly amidst heavy showers.
Belcoo would hold a 1-8 to 1-3 lead at the interval display playing into a stiff breeze. Paul McGrath registered from a placed ball inside a minute before Belcoo struck their goal. Niall Leonard breaking a tackle 30yards from goal, advantage was played and his ball into Niall McGovern seen him fire low to the net.
Aughadrumsee though struck back immediately with Eddie Courtney gathering possession, beating a tackle and firing low to the net on 7minutes. Courtney was to account for all but one of his sides scores in the 60minutes, 6 of these coming from frees.
Paul McGrath pointed after a long run, Jonathan Feeley hit his first of the night from a placed ball before Brian Cox advanced forward to slot over a neat score.
The closing 5minutes of the first half seen Belcoo have their best spell. Philip Leonard getting on some good breaks, James McGrath linking the play with Feeley and Shane McCabe causing problems inside.
Jonathan Feely was to land a massive score from out on the right wing before slotting over two well taken frees while it was a case of deja vu as Brian Cox knocked over a similar score on the run to midway through the half.
The Second half seen Aughadrumsee hold the vast majority of the ball, working it patiently though the hands until they drew a foul from the official in charge. Courtney duly obliged while he did indeed kick an excellent score from play.
Belcoo’s sporadic attacks in the half yielded just three points, Philip Leonard from the left wing, Jonathan Feeley and Niall Cullen the marksmen while the home goalkeeper was forced to make a good save from James McGrath to deny a goal. It was far from pretty for the hour but victory was achieved.
