Slick Belcoo Move To Four Wins From Four
Apr. 30, 2018
U16 Division 3: Belcoo 13-9 v 2-3 Irvinestown
Belcoo U16’s Girls produced a really slick display at home to Irvinestown to move to four wins from four outings. Just six points separated the sides 3weeks ago but on this occasion Belcoo pulled clear after a close first quarter to secure a handsome win in a very stylish manner.
Like last week in Ederney the game got off to a flyer. Sam Martin and Aine Barrett working the ball upfield for Eve Barrett to hit the opening point. Ciana McGrath took a clean kickout, slipped the ball to Scarlett O’Connor who in turn found Sinead Barrett and she duly split the posts for a second point inside the opening 90seconds.
Irvinestown’s first foray forward seen the net rattled to give them the lead but Belcoo quickly tied matters with a third point. Aine Barrett swooping on a loose ball to be fouled, Sinead Barrett clipped over the free. 0-3 to 1-0.
Belcoo hit their first goal as they worked the ball 60yards downfield, Sinead played a free to Ciana McGrath, she pinged a fine diagonal ball into the lively Scarlett O’Connor who held up the play until McGrath, who had continued her run, got within passing distance. O’Connor neat pass was gathered and netted confidently by McGrath.
Back came Irvinestown with a goal and point to lead once more at 2-1 to 1-3 but Belcoo, having moved Rhianne McGuinness onto the dangerous visiting attacker, nullified the threat for the remainder of the contest, tonight’s captain, producing some of her best work of the season.
Goalkeeper Mikayla Maguire came from her line to stop several dangerous attacks and her kickouts were of an extremely high order all evening. Ciara Nolan and Niamh Cullen put in strong displays in the defence with Eimear Magee continuing to go well, breaking through tackles and finding teammates.
Belcoo returned to the lead on 11minutes. The hard working Cara Gray doing well before Eve Barrett and Ciana McGrath combined to set up Sinead Barrett who found the top right corner with a sublime finish. Moments later Eimear Magee turned a ball in the defence and Belcoo worked a move down the right flank that seen Scarlett O’Connor and Eve Barrett bring the ball forward for Ciana McGrath to apply the finish.
An Aine Barrett block carved out a point for Scarlett O’Connor with Sinead Barrett slipping one over the bar moments later. Belcoo had now the visitors penned back, Sam Martin, Sinead Barrett, Cara Gray and Niamh Cullen winning several balls, Aine Barrett and Ciana McGrath linking well as the scores continued to flow.
Sinead Barrett rattled two goals with Eve Barrett and Scarlett O’Connor also netting before the interval while Ciana McGrath popped up with a point. Half time 8-6 to 2-2.
While Belcoo rang the changes in the second period they continued to work tremendously hard, making the right decisions on the ball and great runs off it. Eve and Aine Barrett slotted early points with Cara Gray banging in a goal.
Siofra McAloon returned to the field of play after a hefty blow last week to come out with some great possessions while Ciara McGuinness did likewise against much bigger opponents. Rachel Nolan had a few sights for scores which grazed the posts but she set up others for scores with the lively Riona Keaney netting a well taken goal. Abbie McGovern was involved in a few slick exchanges while further goals were netted by Sinead Barrett (2) and Aine Barrett. Sam Martin capped an excellent hour with a great point from distance as Belcoo finished up 13-9 to 2-3 winners.
They have one foot in the league final at this stage. Next week they host Lisnaksea at 7pm on Monday. Training continues this Wednesday 7pm to 8.15pm.
