Belnaleck Seniors Claim Parish Honours

SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 2: Belcoo 1-13 v 2-15 Belnaleck

It was Belnaleck who would win the battle of Cleenish Parish on Friday evening at a sun soaked MacNean Park on a final scoreline of 2-15 to 1-13. 

The O’Rahilly’s just led the once when Paul McGrath opened the scoring from play in the first minute. The visitors matched the effort before Ciaran McBrien but them ahead. Paul McGrath would land a long range point from play but the visitors would kick on. Darragh McGurn who had a massive hour for the Arney based outfit registered twice while Garreth Cavanagh raced some 70yards to point as the lead stretched to 0-5 to 0-2. 

Paul McGrath would point a left wing free when Jonathan Feeley was upended while the keeper made a fine save low to his left to deny Philip Leonard. 

The visitors stretched their lead further via McBrien and McGurn but Aaron Dolan and Paul McGrath slotting over for the hosts to peg them back. A few minutes before the break a stray crossfield pass was pounced on by Belnaleck who broke the length of the field and were awarded a penalty when Conor McCauley was upended. Darragh McGurn dispatched the kick past Gary Doherty despite a strong hand from the keeper.  Half time Belcoo 0-5 v 1-9 Belnaleck. 

A rousing opening to the second half seen Belcoo get within three. Jonathan Feeley (2), Philip Leonard and Paul McGrath all on target for the O'Rahilly's. 

Belnaleck would turn the tide in the middle sector with McGurn (2) and Peter Monaghan the marksmen. 1-12 to 0-9 they now led. 

Belcoo were to net their goal when Shane McCabe and Brian Cox combined to find Jonathan Feeley unmarked close to goal, he duly applied a low finish to the net on 47minutes. 

Aaron Dolan added a point for a two point game, the O’Rahilly’s on top but wayward in front of goal over the next 5minutes. Belnaleck more lethal on their attacks as they converted their chances, two long range placed balls by McGurn, the second a 45 moved his side five clear again but Belcoo would hit three in a row in the final few minute, Feeley with all of these before the games deciding moment happen on 59minutes with the score 1-15 to 1-13. 

Belcoo turned the ball in midfield and Aaron Dolan set Paul McGrath away, he bore down on goal, slipped the ball to Brian Cox for the goal, it looked a foot block by a defender, not given by the ref and the visitors broke the length of the field to see Peter Monaghan rattle the net and give his side a five point win. 

Up next Belcoo host Newtownbutler at 7.30pm next Friday evening, 11th May.
