U16 Girls Book League Final Place
May. 7, 2018
U16 Division 3: Belcoo 12-10 v 4-2 Lisnaskea
Belcoo U16 Girls booked their place in the League Final with an impressive opening half in this encounter with Lisnaskea before finishing 12-10 to 4-2 winners.
That being said, 4minutes into the game Lisnaskea had hit two goals to lead. Before that Belcoo had already 1-1 on the board. Sam Martin claimed the throw up ball to begin the contest, she moved forward and a crisp bit of fist passing between Aine Barrett and Scarlett O’Connor sent Sinead Barrett in for a point. Rhianne McGuinness was to do well moments later to turnover a Skea attack before her kickpass into Sinead Barrett seen her race in for a well taken goal.
The visitors had their best spell with two quick fire goals before the McAloon sisters were introduced to tighten the defence. This solidifying of the Belcoo backline meant Lisnaskea wouldn’t score in the remainder of the half.
Belcoo cut the deficit to one when Sinead and Aine Barrett combined to set up Ciana McGrath for a good point while Belcoo were to retake the lead 9minutes into the tie. Rhianne McGuinness fastening onto a loose ball on the left wing, her kickpass down the line was taken first time by Ciana McGrath who in turn offloaded to Aoife Keaney who popped a pass into Aine Barrett for the three pointer.
Sinead Barrett followed with a goal within a minute, Rhianne McGuinness winning a breakball in the middle and sending the ball over the top for Barrett to chase, gather and finish. By now the game was settling into a pattern, Cara Gray and Sam Martin were dominant in the mid sector with Scarlett O’Connor getting on a lot of ball to link the play.
Siofra McAloon did superbly well under the pressure of two Lisnaskea attackers to turn the ball over, retain it, and bring her side upfield on 13minutes as Belcoo worked a fourth goal. Scarlett O’Connor gained the ball in the middle of the field and went on a 30yard run before slipping a good kickpass to Ciana McGrath who gathered and netted with a powerful drive. 4-2 to 2-0.
An excellent move involving Sam Martin, Scarlett O’Connor, Eve Barrett and Aine Barrett who all kept the ball well until Ciana McGrath arrived on cue to strike over a fine point from play followed. Eve Barrett was to clip over a point moments later and Belcoo were now in total control of the game.
The hosts rattled in six goals and four points in a devastating final ten minutes of the first half. Scarlett O’Connor knocking over two points in a row before she proved the assist for another Ciana McGrath goal.
Ciana was to win the next kickout and put Scarlett in for goal she duly took the chance while Sinead (2) and Aine Barrett also netted. A fabulous run by player of the match Cara Gray seen her add a well taken point before Aine Barrett split the post from long range.
The final act of the opening half was Ciana McGrath netting again, this time after good work by Eve Barrett. Half time 10-7 to 2-0.
With Belcoo having made a raft of changes the second half was a more even contest, 2-3 to 2-2 the outcome of a low scoring half in Belcoo’s favour. Lisnaskea got their goal after Niamh Cullen had saved the initial penalty kick. Belcoo did respond with 1-1 from the hard working Aine Barrett at centre half forward.
Mikayla Maguire had a good 40minutes outfield having been taken from goals early in the fixture. Riona Keaney proved the liveliest of the second half substitutes, doing well to create the goal for Aine Barrett.
Sinead Barrett was to register 1-1 before being replaced while Belcoo’s sole score in the final 13minutes was a well taken point by Aine Barrett after Rachel Nolan and Riona Keaney were involved in the right wing.
Defensively Niamh McAloon had did very well nursing dodgy fingers from a few weeks ago, while Siofra McAloon was solid and strong as a last line of defence, young Ciara McGuinness also got hands on ball in dangerous areas late in the game. Final Score 12-10 to 4-2.
Belcoo have now won 5 out of 5 games. They will meet Ederney in the League Final. Time, date and venue to be confirmed. Training continues Wednesday from 7pm to 8.15pm.
