Senior Men Record Comfortable Win Over Maguiresbridge
Jun. 2, 2018
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 2: Belcoo 3-14 v 2-4 Maguiresbridge
Belcoo Seniors would run out handsome winners in this Division 2 encounter having held the upperhand from the outset. A three minute spell coming to half time seen Maguiresbridge register half of their 2-4 tally.
Belcoo were quickly out of the blocks, a cross field ball from Philip Leonard sent Paul McGrath through for a well taken goal on three minutes for the opening score. Jonathan Feeley soon added his first from play on the right while Aaron Dolan powered through for another.
The home side were dominant in all areas and continued to keep the ball while working more scores. Philip Leonard was next on the scoresheet with a good point from distance before Paul McGrath was fouled and duly converted the resulting free kick for 1-4 to no score with 15minutes on the clock.
Maguiresbridge did register a few bad wides but their disjointed attack struggled to make any inroads.
They would open their account in the 19th minute but a strong surge from Brian Cox seen him point a fine score while Philip Leonard droving in for another. Belcoo 1-6 to 0-1 up with five minutes to play in the first half. They could and should have been further ahead, Shane McCabe got through one on one and went to dink the keeper, the ball came off the crossbar to safety while a few other attempts from the host missed the target or dropped short.
From nowhere Maguiresbridge netted a goal and two points with the half time whistle coming at a good time for the hosts who were starting to rock a bit having held complete control to this juncture. Half time Belcoo 1-6 v 1-3 Maguiresbridge.
Maguiresbridge were to kick the first score of the second half but from here to the finish Belcoo took over. Jonathan Feeley slotted a close range free while goalkeeper Gary Doherty stroked a 45. Barry McGovern blazed over the bar when well positioned before Paul McGrath landed long range efforts from the right and left wings.
Jonathan Feeley tore in from the left wing to slot another with Barry McGovern angling over after some patient play. Belcoo were now 1-13 to 1-4 ahead and added the gloss to the scoreline, Paul McGrath again netting a well taken three pointer when slipped in by Feeley before Feeley got a goal of his own after an audacious chip from Shane McCabe sent Brian Cox through, he squared to Feeley who drilled low to the net.
Maguiresbridge would plunder a goal when a misplaced pass from keeper Doherty went straight to a visiting player but James McGrath capped a good hour with a long range score to finish the game. Belcoo comfortable winners 3-14 to 2-4. They travel to Derrylin next Sunday, 10th June for a 12pm throw in.
