Goals Win Ladies Game For Erne Gaels
Jun. 3, 2018
SENIOR LADIES 9 A SIDE: Erne Gaels 4-3 v 1-8 Belcoo
Belcoo Ladies would slip to a 4-3 to 1-8 defeat in the 9 a side League against Erne Gaels in warm conditions at the Belleek venue. The O’Rahilly’s held the upperhand in the opening half but were undone in the second period as the hosts netted three goals to run out four point winners.
Belcoo’s first score turned out to be their only goal of the contest. Rachel O’Dolan had claimed possession in the full back line and found Crona Higgins who was fouled, Higgins took a quick free kick to Seana Feeley who raced in for a well taken three pointer.
Into the wee goals, scores were hard to come by, Belcoo were dominating the possession but failed to add to their lead. Some good defending from Leona McNulty and Aoibhinn Gallagher seen Erne Gaels struggle to get close to the Belcoo goals. A ten minute spell without a score in the contest was ended when Tina Gallagher registered while a minute later Michelle Cullen drove upfield, offloaded to Joan Rice who popped over the point.
Belcoo were well on top and in the 14th minute they worked an excellent move through the hands, Crona Higgins playing a one-two with Seana Feeley before finding Michelle Cullen, her shot was well saved Tracey Elliott but Joan Rice was on hand to gather and split the posts.
Erne Gaels hit their first score four minutes before the interval when Olivia Ferguson knocked over a well taken score. Belcoo were to respond immediately, as Tina Gallagher, in her flashy new boots, soccered her way through and chipped the ball over the bar for 1-4 to 0-1.
A late rally at the end of the half by the home team seen them get within two at the interval. A point was scored before a really soft goal was conceded from a Belcoo point of view with the final kick of the half so having controlled the majority of the ball in the half, Belcoo were only two up.
An early goal and point hoisted Erne Gaels into a two point lead five minutes into the second period. Belcoo however soon leveled matters, Aoibhinn Gallagher carried the ball some 50yards down the right wing before registering a fine point. Half time substitute Tamara Dolan tied the contest with a point from the left side at 1-6 to 2-3. Erne Gaels though were to find a third goal. Belcoo thought they’d leveled it up as a ball cracked against the underside of the crossbar and bounced down but it wasn’t given.
Michelle Cullen was to point with five minutes to play but Erne Gaels hit the best score of the evening, working the ball up the field with pinpoint accuracy before thumping the ball to the net. 4-3 to 1-7 with four minutes to go. Belcoo could only conjure a final point from a Joan Rice free kick.
Up next is the 11 a side League on Tuesday evening. Belcoo host Enniskillen Gaels at 7pm. Players to be at the pitch for 6.30pm.
