Ladies Win Tough Battle With Enniskillen
Jun. 5, 2018
Senior Ladies League Division 3: Belcoo 3-9 v 2-10 Enniskillen Gaels
Belcoo would record a two point victory over Enniskillen Gaels in the Senior Ladies League this evening at MacNean Park. It was a tough, tight battle from early on as plenty of hefty challenges were given and taken from both sides while some good football was also on show.
Enniskillen were quickly out of the blocks and had 1-2 on the board inside five minutes. It took Belcoo time to settle but when they did they worked their way back into the contest. The impressive back five of Leona McNulty, Rachel O’Dolan, Aoibhinn Gallagher, Michelle Cullen and Arlene Furey kept the visitors scoreless for 22minutes after their initial bright opening.
Further forward Crona Higgins and Joan Rice helped pin back the Gaels with the Feeley girls, Donna and Seana alongside veteran Tina Gallagher in an energetic half forward line while the inside pair of Amanda McGrath and Linda McGovern spearheaded the attack. It took 7minutes for the O’Rahilly’s to raise the white flag, Linda McGovern pointing a free kick before Donna Feeley went on a mazy run to slot over another moments later.
Belcoo would claim the next kickout and Amanda McGrath returned the ball between the posts for a well taken score. The hosts had a few good goal chances, McGrath and Higgins combined to send Tina Gallagher through on goal but she shot straight at goalkeeper Leanne McElroy. Not long after another Donna Feeley run seen her get through on goal but again, the effort was right at the Gaels netminder.
Belcoo were in control and cut the deficit to one point when Joan Rice finished a neat move on 17minutes while four minutes later another Linda McGovern free had the sides level. There was some great battles developing, Aoibhinn Gallagher drove upfield having beaten her opposite number to the ball down the right side, Rachel O’Dolan turned over a dangerous attack while Michelle Cullen was spraying some great passes out of the defense to the forwards.
Enniskillen were to edge ahead again on 27minutes but good showing by Amanda McGrath seen her set Tina Gallagher up for a point while Linda slotted her third free of the half to give her side the lead for the first time. Enniskillen though were to find themselves two points up at half time when they got a fortunate goal with the last kick of the half. Chloe Dolan couldn't do much to prevent it dropping into the net. Belcoo 0-7 v 2-3 Enniskillen Gaels.
Belcoo began what proved to be a stop start second half really well. Arlene Furey dodged up from wing back to join the attack before she gained possession 25yards from goal and ran in, her somewhat tame effort squirmed through the keepers hands for a three pointer.
Enniskillen were to get themselves back in front, hitting three points in as many minutes, Eimear Keenan with two of these to leave them 2-6 to 1-7 up. Belcoo though were to respond immediately, an excellent move down the left wing involving several players ended with Crona Higgins gathering possession close to goal and netting a well hit effort. Eimear Keenan tied matters in the 46th minute at 2-7 a piece, the game very much in the melting pot as it entered the final quarter.
It was helter skelter stuff at this juncture as every ball was fiercely contested, the body was being put on the line, tempers began to flair at times too. Leona McNulty made two excellent turnovers when Enniskillen looked like breaking in for goals. Arlene Furey and Seana Feeley made good stops to win back ball while Joan Rice came to the fore linking the defence to the attack. Donna Feeley returned to the game after 10minutes in the sin bin and she did fierce well to keep the ball under pressure before slipping it to Linda McGovern for a fine point. Belcoo one up again.
Enniskillen weren’t done, two more points had them ahead but Belcoo had a good spell six minutes from time, Tina Gallagher netting a goal before being forced off with an ankle injury while Linda slotted a free from the left wing. Belcoo now in command 3-9 to 2-9.
The visitors were to make a late surge at the Belcoo goals but some superb defending by the Belcoo ladies once more thwarted several dangerous moments, the Gaels just managed a point before the referee eventually, 46minutes after he started the half, blew his whistle to end it, Belcoo winners by 2points .
