U14 Girls Win Great Game In Brewster
Jun. 25, 2018
U14 Division 1: Enniskillen Gaels 1-5 v 2-7 Belcoo
The Under 14 Girls had another excellent victory this evening as they overturned a 11point defeat 10days ago to win by five tonight. In doing it the O’Rahilly’s had to come from behind in what was a tough and tight battle played in hot conditions on the big field in Brewster Park, a first experience for our girls of the county ground, the senior changing rooms and all.
There was some superb display from the girls in blue this evening, following on from where they left off against Knockninny last time out. Hungry, strong, backing each other, up for the challenge and making good use of the ball.
Enniskillen made a great opening to the tie with the lively Erin Tierney registering two well taken points from play while the Belcoo response was a pointed free from Sinead Barrett when Abbie McGovern was fouled. Tierney responded with a free for the Gaels while Belcoo made a number of positional switches in defence.
Sisters Niamh McAloon and Siofra McAloon assigned marking jobs on Erin Tierney and Erin Farry, both did fantastically well curtailing the influence of these two girls over the remainder of the contest. Sam Martin was unplayable in the middle of the park this evening, covering a serious amount of ground, turning great ball, playing great passes and winning umpteen kick outs.
Riona Keaney’s kickouts were hitting moving targets throughout, while Sam Martin was the main beneficiary, Rhianne McGuinness got her hands on a few as did the two McAloon’s and Cara Gray while Eimear Magee having been moved back into the defence won a great kickout which set up the Belcoo goal.
Magee showed great hands initially to secure the ball, before driving through the tackle and taking a solo, she got her head up and found Scarlett O’Connor with a good one bounce pass, she in turn offloaded to Sinead Barrett who ran down the right side and netted a dipping effort from distance to tie proceedings, 1-1 to 0-4, Orla Murphy having hit the fourth Gaels point just prior to the Belcoo goal.
Mikayla Maguire now operating in the attack had a great finish to the half with some strong bursts down the right side, her combination with Sinead Barrett seen Eve Barrett skip in for a neat point coming to half time.
It was Enniskillen however who would hold the interval lead, Tierney’s free kick from 25yards, dropped under the bar for a goal, 1-4 to 1-2 the home side led.
The O’Rahilly’s made a great start to the second half, Sam Martin and Rhianne McGuinness turned over some great ball, the latter finding Sinead Barrett who raced in for a good point before Sam Martin pinged a perfect long kick pass into Mikayla Maguire arms, she turned and fired over a fine score to level matters.
Enniskillen were to take the lead again while some excellent and brave defending from Ciara McGuinness seen her first to a few balls while her reading of the game and positional sense to cut out other passes was brilliant. Niamh McAloon was a proving hard to get past at centre back with Niamh Cullen growing into the contest at wing back.
Belcoo were to level 10minutes from time, Sam Martin, Eve Barrett and Mikayla Maguire combined in a nice move down the right. Maguire was fouled, she quickly took the free across the field to Sinead Barrett who gathered and split the posts for 1-5 a piece.
The O’Rahilly’s had pushed up on the kickouts and were winning all the breaks from Sam Martin and Cara Gray. Ciara Nolan made a good run down the left, the ball was worked infield between O’Connor and Maguire before Eve Barrett swooped in for a point giving her side the lead for the first time in the entire game.
Belcoo would get a goal four minutes from time as Eve Barrett did really well to keep the ball in on the right sideline, she combined with Mikayla Maguire before Ciara Nolan got the ball 10yards out and fired into the roof of the net.
Sinead Barrett followed up with a brilliant long range free kick after Scarlett O’Connor had carried the ball a long way with a few players hanging out of her with win the free.
Enniskillen mounted a late challenge, Riona Keaney equal to two shots at goal, saving both, carrying the ball out before clearing to safety. Ciara McGuinness also blocked a good shot at goal while Niamh McAloon, Sam Martin and captain for the night Rhianne McGuinness took the team up the field in the closing moments before the referee would blow the final whistle to end a great contest.
Belcoo 2-7 to 1-5 winners having held Enniskillen to just the one point in the second half. It was another great team display as every girl put in a massive shift for the cause tonight.
