Jul. 1, 2018
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 2: Newtownbutler 2-10 v 3-16 Belcoo
The Senior Men made it five wins on the spin as they returned from Newtownbutler winners by 9points on a 3-16 to 2-10 scoreline. The contest was tied by the end of the first quarter but Belcoo finished the half well to lead by six points. Newtown cut the deficit to three points on a number of occasions in the second half but a late flurry from the O’Rahilly’s seen them run out handsome winners by the finish.
The O’Rahilly’s made a bright opening with the wind in their favour, Paul McGrath, Aaron Dolan and Brian Cox all angling over good scores from play with Newtown registering their opening score from a placed ball. The home side would however hit the net soon after, Brendan McBrien driving through the visiting defence and thumping a shot into the roof of the net. James Connolly tagged on a free but Belcoo responded with points from Dolan and Cox after neat forward moves for 1-2 to 0-5 on 15minutes.
Following a short water break, Belcoo took control, Paul McGrath landed a long range point from play to begin a period of dominance, Brian Cox surged in for his third of the game from the right side while the O’Rahilly’s netted a first goal. Barry McGovern played a one-two with McGrath before racing downfield, his shot was blocked down but Aaron Dolan was on hand to fist the loose ball to the net.
The O’Rahilly’s had a stranglehold around the middle with James McGrath, Brian Cox, Eoin Shiels and Paul McGrath seeing plenty of ball. Ryan Leonard was next to find the target joining the attack to slot over. Paul McGrath fired a point from distance after good interplay with Gary Maguire before McGrath tapped over a free having been fouled when heading for goals.
Belcoo now 1-10 to 1-3 to the good, James Connolly having slotted a free in a rare foray forward. By half time it was 1-12 to 1-6, Connolly again the marksman from placed balls while Aaron Dolan landed two good scores from play for the visitors.
Newtown were to dominate the first 15minutes of the second half but for all their dominance, just two points were taken, Frank Mulligan and another Connolly free kick. The water break stemmed the flow. Belcoo regrouped and a well worked move seen Ryan Leonard hit his sides first score of the half.
The next three scores in the game were all goals. Aaron Dolan racing down the right before fisting across goal for Dean McDermott to palm into the net. Newtown came straight down the field to register their second while Belcoo went back down the other end and hit their third. James McGourty treading a fine kickpass through to Gary Maguire who found the top left corner for 3-13 to 2-9.
Belcoo goalkeeper Gary Doherty was to make two fine stops as the hosts continued looking more goals in the closing period however only a point was mustered. The O’Rahilly’s hitting the last three points of the game, Aaron Dolan rounding off a great hour with two efforts either side of a James McGrath point from play.
