Senior Men Take Derby Honours
Jul. 21, 2018
SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 2: Belnaleck 1-6 v 1-7 Belcoo
Belcoo would take the spoils in the parish derby with Belnaleck on Friday evening. The only time the O’Rahilly’s led in the game was in the final few minutes as Paul McGrath slotted a free to give them the 1-7 to 1-6 victory. It’s now 7 straight league wins for the sky blues as they look certain to secure a top four slot with four games to play.
This was an incredibly low scoring affair on a ropey pitch with a tricky wind at the road end. Belcoo attacked that way in the opening half and despite holding the lion share of the ball, they returned just the one point in the first half, Aaron Dolan the scoretaker.
At the other end of the field veteran forward Mark Gallagher had registered twice from play with Darragh McGurn hitting a free kick. Belnaleck has set up defensively and the visitors were working the ball well to the 45m line. Dean McDermott, Eoin Shiels, Gerard McHugh and the McGrath brothers were getting on a lot of ball.
At the back for Belcoo just three points were conceded with the wind favouring the hosts. Steely determined defending from Shane McAloon, Niall Leonard, Martin Corrigan and captain Niall McGovern seen them turnover attacks on several occasions. Half time 0-3 to 0-1.
Paul McGrath takes his side forward during Friday's Derby Clash
It was to take 8minutes for a first score of the second half, Paul McGrath weaving in for a left footed point to half the deficit. Again Belcoo were having the better of the possession but failing to produce scores. Against the run of play a long hopeful ball forward by Belnaleck bounced over a Belcoo defender and the hosts found the net, moments later they hit a point, 1-4 to 0-2. It looked like job done as scores were hard to come by.
Belcoo though continued to work hard and they eked out a point from Aaron Dolan before they worked a somewhat scrappy. Gerard McHugh galloping down the left wing, cutting inside he looked like he’d lost the ball but somehow got it back, he was through on goal, the keeper saved but Gary Maguire was on hand to toe poke the ball to the net from close range. The O’Rahilly’s back to within a point. 1-4 to 1-3.
Kane Connor & Dean McDermott do battle
Belcoo levelled from a well struck Gary Doherty 45, Belnaleck edged ahead again, Kane Connor stroking a fine effort from the outside of the boot before a young substitute put two between them. Conor McAloon halved the deficit again with a free kick, 1-6 to 1-5 with five to play.
Paul McGrath would kick the final two scores of the game as he levelled it up and knocked over what proved the winner a minute before the game entered stoppage time.
Goalkeeper Gary Doherty would make a fine save to deny Cullen a fisted goal as a ball dropped into the square late on but it was to be Belcoo’s evening as they make the short journey home with the victory secured. They are in action on Sunday at 12pm, home to Derrylin.
Team: Gary Doherty (0-1), Martin Corrigan, Niall Leonard, Shane McAloon, Dean McDermott, Niall McGovern, Gerard McHugh, Paul McGrath (0-3), James McGrath, Michael McGourty, Niall Cullen, Conor McAloon (0-1), Eoin Shiels, Aaron Dolan (0-2), Gary Maguire (1-0). Sub Philip Leonard.
