Promotion Achieved For The Reserves
Jul. 28, 2018
ERNE CUP DIVISION 2: Ederney 2-11 v 2-12 Belcoo
The Reserve Men gained promotion back to Division 1 the hard way, the Belcoo way. Leading for the entire contest whilst missing a host of chances to kill the game, they were almost undone at the death as Ederney netted a goal in stoppage time to level. A draw was no good to Belcoo, time was up, Paddy Burns claimed the kickout and the O’Rahilly’s worked the last play of the game to Aaron Dolan who slotted the winner much to the relief of all concerned.
It was a deserved success and a fine achievement for the side throughout the season. Devenish claimed a one point win to go up also, the two sides will meet next Sunday, 5th August in the League Final.
The O’Rahilly’s made a great start, Aaron Dolan hitting a point from close range while Dean McDermott raced away from a few defenders to drill a fine low shot into the net. Ederney would land a point but Belcoo remained on the offensive and Brendan McPartland got forward to drill over a point while Dean McDermott and Ian Corrigan also split the posts.
Ederney worked themselves back into the contest with a few points while Jack O’Dolan needed to make two smart saves to deny goals. It was 1-4 to 0-4 when Belcoo struck their second goal, Gary Maguire drilling to the net when sent through.
Ederney hit points either side of an Aaron Dolan score to leave it 2-5 to 0-6 at half time. Belcoo having played with a significantly strong breeze.
Gary Maguire extended the advantage upon the resumption to six but it was quickly halved as the hosts hit their first goal on 36mins. The Belcoo response was good, both Ian Corrigan and Dean McDermott pointing when they were likely going for goals.
Belcoo would go 10mins without a score, by that time it was back to 2-8 to 1-8. Patrick Burns ended the prolonged scoreless period for his side with a well taken score, Aaron Dolan followed with one moments later. Ederney, despite having nothing to play for weren’t going away and they hit three points in a row to get within two.
Ian Corrigan put three between them but in the final minute Ederney rattled the net to tie matters. Thankfully there was one last play and Belcoo made the most of it to secure a one point victory on a 2-12 to 2-11 scoreline. Congratulations to the players and management, best of luck in next weeks final against the neighbours.
