Ladies Beaten By A Point In Belleek
Aug. 11, 2018
SENIOR LADIES DIVISION 3: Erne Gaels 3-7 v 1-12 Belcoo
Belcoo Senior Ladies suffered an agonising one point defeat in Belleek on Friday evening in what was a titanic tussle over the course of a tough hour. The game was level on four occasions in the second half but in added time it was the home side who snatched the late winner as Belcoo were left to rue a host of missed chances in both halves when they were holding the upperhand.
It took a right while for the game to come to life as sluggish starts were made by both sides. A pointed free from Emer McMahon opened the scoring in the third minute while an excellent long range point from Amanda McGrath on 8minutes levelled matters for the first time. Lisa Stewart was fouled and popped over the subsequent free while Aoife McCann responded from play at the other end, 0-2 a piece ten minutes in.
Belleek would hit the net as a shot for a point dipped under the crossbar while they added a point from play. Belcoo would then tighten defensively, some great work by Leona McNulty and Aoife Keaney stopped attacks with Arlene Furey and Crona Higgins doing well on the two wings cutting out passes as Erne Gaels went some 15minutes without a score.
In this time Belcoo had managed to get themselves back into the game. Leona McNulty’s free kick found Michelle Cullen who drove to midfield before picking out Donna Feeley on the right wing, she beat her opposite number and raced in for a well take point. It was to be level for the third time when Joan Rice collected a kickout and put Collette Rice through register Belcoo’s only goal as she side-stepped the goalkeeper, 1-3 each with 18minutes on the clock.
It was here Belcoo began to take a firm grip of the contest however they were to squander a host of opportunities with the wrong options taken, stray final passes and wayward shots meaning they failed to capitalise on their dominance. Some seven minutes had elapsed before a score was mustered. In fact, the O’Rahilly’s hit four points in a devastating three minute spell. Donna Feeley with three in a row before Collette Rice popped over a close range free. Belleek would respond to end their drought on the stroke of half time and leave it Erne Gaels 1-4 v 1-7 Belcoo.
A superbly worked move in the opening minute of the second half pushed Belcoo four clear. Seana Feeley doing well to turnover the ball in midfield, the ball was worked through the hands well, Michelle Cullen, Collette Rice and Donna Feeley all involved before the latter slipped the ball into Amanda McGrath who blazed over the bar with the goals at her mercy. McGrath would kick a fine score from play moments later but the five point advantage only lasted 60seconds.
The Erne Gaels response was to be a second three pointer as the deficit was cut to two points. A long ball over the top was gathered by Ailish Keown who thumped a shot against the crossbar, the ball bounced down and was fisted to the net by an attacker despite the best efforts of Linda McGovern and Leona McNulty.
Amanda McGrath was to hit her third point of the second half after a good flowing move between Lisa Stewart, Arlene Furey and the Feeley sisters as Donna got in and drilled a shot against the crossbar, McGrath reacting quickest to fire over.
By the 47th minute the sides were level once more, Erne Gaels rattling in a third goal as an overload in attack seen them waltz in for the score. 3-4 to 1-10 the score read. Emer McMahon lofted over a free to give her side the lead 8minutes from time but Collette Rice pointed for Belcoo. McMahon would then hit a great point from play while Rice tapped over a 20m free. Draw game again with five minutes to play at 3-6 to 1-12.
For 5 solid minutes Belcoo camped inside the Erne Gaels 45metre line with the ball, three wides were registered while a great run from Donna Feeley brought a save from the home goalkeeper. The score required to retake the lead didn’t arrive. Erne Gaels broke in stoppage time, they got a goal but it was disallowed for a square ball, they did regain possession from the restart and hit what proved to be the winning score. With the last act of the game, corner back Aoife Keaney solo’d some 80metres, deep into the Erne Gaels defence but her ball into the forwards was gathered by a defender and with that the final whistle went to signal a 1point win for the home team. A hard loss to take for the Belcoo girls who put in a good shift over the hour and would have held the lion share of the ball throughout.
Promotion now looks out of the question after a fourth league defeat, the second by a single point. There are two games to play, away to Knockninny and away to Belnaleck.
