U13 Girls Claim 3rd Place In Division 1 as Strong Kinawley Win The Division
Oct. 27, 2018
The Under 13 Girls Season drew to its conclusion at a bitterly cold and rain soaked Kinawley venue on Saturday afternoon. Our Girls would lose the Semi Final to the hosts who won the Final later on, without conceding a score all day, while Belcoo claimed the win in the 3rd/4th place playoff game having beaten Irvinestown.
Back (L-R): Abbie McGovern, Eve Barrett, Caitlyn Nolan, Niamh Cullen, Sinead Barrett, Cara Gray, Siofra McAloon, Scarlett O'Connor, Rachel Nolan.
Front (L-R): Eimear Gray, Serena McKeown, Lisa Lavery, Riona Keaney, Emilie McCallion, Lily Mae McNulty, Cairenn McGrath, Ciara Parker, Ciara McGuinness, Megan Maguire.
The O’Rahilly’s had a perfect season heading into the Semi Final having won all games in their group over the last few months but they met an extremely impressive and strong Kinawley side who had the first score inside 30seconds and never looked back. Belcoo never fired in this game as the hailstones rained down and Kinawley penned them back. The home side hitting 2-3 in the first period.
For Belcoo, Caitlyn Nolan and Siofra McAloon were trying hard in the defence to stem the flow of attacks while Eimear Gray was doing a good job on the powerful Caoimhe Hamilton. In the second half Belcoo put up a better show with a few attacks however they yielded no scores. Scarlett O’Connor was showing well for kickouts while Ciara Parker and Eimear Gray continued to do well at the back.
In the 3rd/4th place playoff Belcoo warmed to the task as the weather perked up a bit. Frozen hands and feet made life difficult for the two teams but Belcoo would register a goal on 4minutes. Cara Gray, who’d a great second game, finished off a well work move involving Rachel Nolan and Abbie McGovern.
Niamh Cullen popped over a point after good work from Eve Barrett and Emilie McCallion down the right side before Abbie McGovern swivelled and split the posts after Rachel Nolan won a good ball out in front. Defensively again Ciara Parker and Eimear Gray were excelling, Gray making a fine block close to goals. Lisa Lavery got on some ball with Ciara McGuinness thwarting some move down her wing as the first half due to a close, Belcoo 1-2 to 0-0 ahead.
Siofra McAloon brings the ball out of defence in the 3rd/4th place playoff
The O’Rahilly’s were moving the ball must better and more importantly, they were picking out teammates with passes, a well worked move the full length of the field seen them register a second goal early in the second half. Riona Keaney found Cairenn McGrath from the kickout on the right wing. McGrath feed Sinead Barrett who in turn drilled a long ball into Abbie McGovern, a one two with Rachel Nolan seen the ball worked to Eve Barrett who duly drilled low to the corner.
Sinead Barrett would kick a magnificent long range point on the run, Lily Mae McNulty then slipped the ball to Rachel Nolan for a deserved score. Nolan, very impressive throughout this contest, showing well and using the ball well.
Irvinestown pressed hard late on and registered a goal but both Serena McKeown and Megan Maguire alongside the Gray sisters denied clear shots at goal while Riona Keaney was alert to anything in and around the square. Belcoo 2-4 to 1-0 victors, claiming a 3rd place finish in Division 1.
That brings an end to the underage girls football. A lot of these girls are on the go from 22nd January. They’ve earned their break. Massive thanks for the commitment, dedication and effort all season. U16 League & Championship Double was secured while both the U14 & U13 teams finished 3rd in Division 1. We thank the coaches Paul, Sharon & Deirdre for their time and efforts also.
