Harps U16 Girls Keep 100% Winning Record
Apr. 18, 2019
U16 Girls Division 2: Derrygonnelly 5-13 v 0-6 Belcoo
Derrygonnelly Harps maintained their 100% winning record with a good home win over Belcoo, the Harps 5-13 to 0-6 victors by the finish. The home side made a blistering start to the contest and rattled in 2-4 in the opening ten minutes. Bronagh Smyth with two well taken goals after nice passages of play while Dervla Duffy and Stephanie Jones were among the points.
Belcoo were struggling to get to the pace of the game and match the power being produced by the home side in the opening quarter. Having lost Aine Barrett to an early injury, the visitors eventually settled and began to make some turnovers while they got on a lot more ball and got themselves downfield to register two points.
Ciana McGrath receiving a short free from Sinead Barrett before firing over from distance while a good move and some patient play seen the ball recycled to Abbie McGovern who slotted over a fine point under pressure. 2-4 to 0-2 with 16minutes played.
The game became much more even for the next period as Belcoo began to match their opponents, the Harps forced to fire a few wides as the pressure was applied. Smyth and Jones did land points but some good work by Scarlett O’Connor and Rachel Nolan seen Sinead Barrett register for Belcoo to leave it 2-6 to 0-3 at the interval.
The second period continued to be tight in the opening ten minutes, both sides matched each other with some great pieces of defending. Siofra McAloon was again going well at the back for Belcoo. The O’Rahilly’s lost Ciana McGrath to an injury after she won a penalty for her side. Sinead Barrett took the kick but the goalkeeper Aife Campbell pushed the ball over the bar for a point.
Derrygonnelly would take control of the tie at this juncture, the pinned back Belcoo and hit three goals in seven minutes. The Belcoo response was an excellent Sinead Barrett run and score while Caitlyn Nolan made a brave block on the wing.
The Harps would finish strongly, registering seven points as the Belcoo challenge wilted. Sinead Barrett again the O’Rahilly’s scorer after sister Eve had did well but the game was to finish 5-13 to 0-6. For Belcoo, Eimear Gray put in a fine display with Siofra McAloon and Ciana McGrath going well prior to her injury. Derrygonnelly have now advanced to the League Final. Belcoo have to play Lisnaskea on Monday and Ederney on Wednesday. They must win both to join Derrygonnelly in the decider.
