Senior Men Win High Scoring Contest In Brookeborough
Apr. 20, 2019
Senior League Division 2: Brookeborough 2-11 v 1-16 Belcoo
It was a bit of a shootout on Saturday evening in Brookeborough as the hosts and Belcoo put on a real ding dong affair. The sides level numerous times over the hour but it was the O’Rahilly’s who ground out the victory with two late points to remain joint top of the league in the early stages of the season.
Points were traded from the outset and by the 15th minute it was 1-4 to 0-7. Belcoo had six different scorers of cleverly crafted efforts. Matthew McAloon, Philip Leonard, Dean McDermott, Michael McGourty, Niall Cullen and two fine strikes from wing back Aaron Dolan.
Conor Goodwin and Aidan Boyle did most of the scoring for their side over the hour while Mickey Rice broke from wing back and got on the end of a quickly taken free kick and netted.
Belcoo responded to the three pointer with one of their own as Dean McDermott was fouled for a penalty which Philip Leonard duly converted low to the right corner. Leonard then added a point from play before the hosts hit a quick 1-1 coming to half time, the goal from Damien Curran who reacted quickest to a free that hit the post and dropped into the penalty area. A late Niall Cullen point levelled the game again by half time, Brookeborough 2-6 v 1-9 Belcoo.
Things didn’t change much in the second period, tit for tat, point for point, it was end to end, forward lines definitely on top. The hosts were reliant on free kicks in this period while Belcoo continued to work the ball well and slot over some neat points. Aaron Dolan, Matthew McAloon and Paul McGrath on target, these had been matched by three Conor Goodwin frees.
Paul McGrath would edge his side ahead 8minutes from time but Goodwin and Boyle soon had the home side in front while a bit of fisty cuffs went on close to the Brookeborough dugout. The hosts a point up and looking to see the game out. Belcoo had other ideas, Christoper Leonard powered through for a point to level. Jonathan Feeley’s first involvement from the bench was to slot over a nice point on the left side while Dean McDermott angled over an excellent score after a flowing move down the right to give his side the two point win on a 1-16 to 2-11 scoreline.
