U14 Girls Begin With A Win
Jul. 19, 2020
Our Under 14 Girls got their season off to a winning start on Sunday afternoon with a 2-27 to 2-4 victory over Erne Gaels.
It was a slow start for the O’Rahilly’s who eventually got going coming to half time and they continued to hold the upper hand during a much improved second half display.
Erne Gaels recorded half of their final tally in the opening 5minutes of the contest. Belcoo took their time to warm to the task, the excellent Emilie McCallion first to fire in a score on 6minutes with a goal. Ciara Parker soon added two points to level matters, one of which was made by the roving Siofra McAloon who played a number of one two’s up the field before finding Parker for the score.
The hosts gained a good foothold in the tie at this juncture, Eimear Gray was impressive at centre back with Lily-Mae McNulty and Megan Maguire going well in defence. Emilie McCallion knocked over her first point while Eve Barrett strode in from the wing to fist a score.
Erne Gaels would record a second goal but Belcoo finished the half with five points. Riona Keaney, Ciara Parker (2), Emilie McCallion and Scarlett O’Connor all on target as the half time score read Belcoo 1-9 v 2-2 Erne Gaels.
Belcoo were much improved in the second period, Erne Gaels did hit the first score but from here to the finish Belcoo held sway. Cairenn McGrath, Lily-Mae McNulty and Emilie McCallion worked well together down the left side on several occasions in the half to create scoring opportunities. Scarlett O’Connor won a large number of kickouts which kept the visitors pinned back, allowing Belcoo to knock over some more points. Abbie McGovern, Ciara Parker, Scarlett O’Connor and Rachel Nolan all split the posts early in the half.
An overworked Erne Gaels defence were struggling to cope with the waves of Belcoo attacks but to their credit they kept working hard. They have some very young but game wee players who’ll no doubt go far in the future.
Rachel Nolan netted a goal midway through the half as scores continued to flow, Ciara Parker registered either side of an Abbie McGovern point while Riona Keaney and Eve Barrett finished off good moves with scores. Nolan and Parker slotted another point each before exiting the fray, substitutes Ella McGovern and Zoe Lavery were quickly into the thick of the action getting their hands of plenty of the ball.
Scarlett O’Connor powered her way down the centre for a fine score while McNulty and McCallion combined for the latter to slot over a nice point. McCallion was on the scoresheet moments later as substitute Casey Nolan slipped her in for another score. Eve Barrett was to ping over a fine score from distance before Ella McGovern capped a good second half performance by her team with a well taken point.
The O’Rahilly’s travel to Garrison on Monday evening for a 7pm throw in. Players to be venue for 6.30pm.
