Juniors: Belcoo 1-9 Tempo 2-8
Jul. 10, 2010
League leaders Belcoo threw away a four point lead in the dying moments of this game as the Tempo veteran Sean Breen scrambled two goals to ensure Tempo returned home with the two points. This was a game Belcoo dominanted throughout but the failure to put more scores on the board allowed Tempo to snatch a late victory and as a result it has now opened up the race for the league final with four games remaining.
Belcoo started brightly and following a good run by Jonathan Feeley, Gavin Leonard's shot rebounded off the crossbar and into the path of Nevan Higgins who found the net from close range after just 4minutes. Jonathan Feeley and John Carrigan both kicked scores from play to open up a five point lead. Belcoo's impressive start could have got better as Declan Leonard put Gavin Leonard through on goal however the latter was denied a goal by a good Stephen Jackson save.
Tempo began to find their feet with two scores in quick succession, the second a long distance score from Eunan McCann to reduce the deficit. Jonathan Feeley then went on a scoring spree as he fired over three excellent individual scores from play within the space of three minutes midway through the half. In the last 10minutes of the half both sides only registered one score each, Niall McCusker for the away side while Feeley taped over a close range free for Belcoo. Half Time: Belcoo 1-6 Tempo 0-3
Niall McCusker pointed within seconds of the restart before Ian Corrigan grazed the crossbar when going for goal. A long 60yard driven ball by Sean Breen bounced over the crossbar but Gavin Leonard matched this to keep four points between the sides. Jonathan Feeley added his 6th point of the game and this was cancelled out by Brian Jackson's free kick. At this stage the score was Belcoo 1-9 Tempo 0-8 and their was still 15minutes to play.
A procession of wides littered the closing quarter and it wasn't until 2minutes remaining that the next score was registered. A Brian Jackson freekick was floated into the area as Tempo needed goals and Sean Breen jumped highest to fist the ball into the net. Now with one point between the sides Tempo hunted for a point and Brian Jackson's attempted equaliser was blocked by Shain Gallagher and went out for a 45.
The resulting kick led to a loose ball bouncing around the goalmouth and it was Breen who found the ball in his hands and he fired into the net to give Tempo a victory they never looked like getting. Belcoo will wonder how they didn't collect maximum points from this game but earlier in the season they snatched an unlikely victory from Tempo via a late goal so over the two games a win a piece is probably correct outcome.
