JUNIORS: Belcoo 2-4 Roslea 0-7
Jul. 24, 2010
Belcoo collected all two points on offer from this Erne Cup tie against Roslea on Saturday evening. Belcoo who were without some more of their more experienced Juniors produced a performance of real grit, determination and hard work to ensure they finished winners. Although this was a low scoring encounter as both sides struggled with a difficult breeze, there was some superb score taking.
Roslea's Aaron Mulligan opened the scoring in the 7th minute from a placed ball before Belcoo opened their account in 11th minute. A long ball was played into Ian Corrigan, he collected it well before sending Gary Maguire through on goal, Maguire beat his marker and made no mistake with his shot as he fired low into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Within a minute Belcoo had a second goal, Niall Cullen's long kick pass was broken down by Nevan Higgins and midfielder Patrick Burns was on hand to gather the loose ball before finishing high into the net. Aidan McGrath then kicked a great score from near the sideline as Belcoo opened up a 6point lead midway through the opening half.
Corner Back Shain Gallagher was next to get on the scoresheet after a superb run down the left wing, he cut across the field and fired over from 30yards. Roslea got their second score of the half from their midfielder but it was Belcoo's Centre Half Back Eoin Leonard who kicked the last score. Again this was a well taken point from 30yards to leave it Belcoo 2-3 Roslea 0-2 at half time.
Patrick Burns completed a well worked move with a well taken point 2 minutes into the second half, this proved to be Belcoo's last score of the match but it had given them an 8 point advantage to hold onto as Roslea now had the breeze favouring them.
Roslea's main scoring threat Aaron Mulligan kicked a point in the 39th minute, a score from their wing half forward following within a minute and Mulligan then kicked a free from all of 50yards to reduce the deficit to five. Roslea where trying the long high ball that worked for Belcoo in the first period but Full Back Shane McAloon was breaking the ball and both Ryan McGovern and Shain Gallagher who had excellent games were picking up the scraps.
Mulligan tapped over a free in the 50th minutes and another score in the 53rd minute meant there was only a goal between them. Roslea however couldn't find a way through in the closing stages. Ryan McGovern made an great block before Aidan Leonard had a heart stopping moment in the Belcoo goals after he fumbled a high ball. Gerard Mellor and Patrick Burns kept working hard around the middle along with Ian Corrigan while Aidan McGrath was a constant outlet up front as Belcoo hung on for the two points.
