SENIORS: Belcoo 2-10 Devenish 0-9
Jul. 30, 2010
Belcoo returned to winning ways with a seven point victory over neighbours Devenish on Friday evening. A victory for the away side would have brought them level on points with Belcoo however Belcoo were not willing to give away another two points at home despite playing the majority of the second period with only 14men.
Devenish opened the scoring through a close range Chris O'Brien free before Kieran Leonard did the same for Belcoo. Kieran Leonard slotted over a good score from play after a well worked move but scores from Darren Brady and a John O'Flanagan free left Devenish 0-3 to 0-2 in at the quarter mark.
Belcoo, who had the aid of the wind finished the half strongly. Kieran Leonard again kicked a good score from play, Brian Cox also registered a point while Ronan Ferguson got his first score of the night from a long range effort. Devenish's response was another John O'Flanagan free kick.
In the closing minutes of the first half Belcoo's corner back Ryan Leonard got onto the end of a flowing move and split the posts from an acute angle. Belcoo then struck their first goal in the 29th minute, Paul McGrath intercepted a Terry O'Flanagan pass on his own 40 yard line, he tranferred the ball down the right wing to Ciarán Flaherty, Flaherty then played a sublime ball into the path of Brian Cox who made no mistake with the finish, sending the ball high into the back of the net. Half Time Belcoo 1-6 Roslea 0-4.
Again it was Chris O'Brien who registered the first score of the half with 35yard free kick. Belcoo responded through Flaherty before Christopher Leonard received his marching orders from referee Martin Higgins for a second bookable offence.
Now down to 14men and leading by 5points Belcoo struck a second goal, this time a good move down the right involving Ryan Dolan and Paul McGrath led to the latter feeding the ball into the path of the advancing Niall McGovern, McGovern then fisted the ball across to Ronan Ferguson, who duly dispatched the ball past Thomas Treacy in the Devenish goals.
Terry O'Flanagan kicked a fine score from play while Chris O'Brien also registered as Devenish tried to make use of their one man advantage and get themselves back into the game. Kieran Leonard pointed a free as Belcoo continuted to add to their tally. With the game entering the final quarter Belcoo led 2-8 to 0-7.
Over the closing period Devenish struggled to create any goal scoring chances as the Belcoo defense held firm. Ronan Ferguson kicked two points from play and Darren Brady done the same for Devenish as Belcoo ran out comfortable winners in the end.
