JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Roslea 1-13 Belcoo 1-8
Aug. 14, 2010
Roslea came away from Brewster Park on Saturday evening as the Junior Champions following a five point victory over Belcoo. Roslea had to hold off a strong Belcoo fightback midway through the second period but they never trailed at any stage in this fixture.
In an opening quarter that only yielded one score, this coming from Roslea's Ryan McCormack in the sixth minute, Belcoo had some decent possession but with Jonathan Feeley hitting the post from a 14metre free and Shain Gallagher's goal bound effort shaving the post it looked like it may not be Belcoo's day.
Belcoo did register their opening score in the 19th minute through Feeley following a quickly taken free kick from Aidan McGrath. Liam Lynch put Roslea in front with a long range effort before Feeley levelled within seconds. Sean Quigley then announced himself with a well taken catch following by a sweetly struck left footed score in the 23rd minute to put Roslea 0-3 to 0-2 ahead.
In the closing 5minutes of the half Roslea finished very strongly. Dermot Reilly, Liam Lynch and Ryan McCormack all fired over points but a goal in the 30th minute from Sean Quigley established a lead the reflected the way the first half had gone. A long ball into the area seen Quigley fist the ball beyond the advancing Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals. Patrick Burns kicked a free for Belcoo in stoppage time to leave the score Roslea 1-6 Belcoo 0-3 at the interval.
The first three scores in the second half came from frees, Sean Quigley got Roslea's in the first minute while Sean McNulty and Patrick Burns knocked over Belcoo's in the 2nd and 5th minute respectively. Brendan McKenna and Quigley traded scores with Gavin Leonard and Belcoo substitute John Carrigan to leave it 1-9 to 0-7 with 15minutes remaining.
In the final quarter Belcoo started to control matters around the middle third with Seamus Conlon in particularly good form, Ian Corrigan had been brought out to centre half forward and Sean McNulty was alot getting himself on plenty of ball.
Belcoo managed to find the net in the 48th minute, Stephen Nolan collected a beeaking ball, he fed it down the left to Jonathan Feeley, Feeley transferred the ball to the on-rushing Patrick Burns who strode forward and found the top right hand corner of the net from 20yards. Now only two points separated the sides but unfortunately for Belcoo they had three attacks in quick succession that all failed to get a score. Roslea countered with scores from Niall Cosgrove and Sean Quigley before Patrick Burns pointed a free.
As the game entered added time Roslea led 1-11 to 1-8, Belcoo couldn't get the goal they required and late scores from Aidan McMahon and a 45 from Quigley ensured the silverware went to Roslea on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-8.
