SENIORS: Belcoo 5-16 Erne Gaels 2-8
Aug. 15, 2010
Belcoo banished the memory of last weekends Championship defeat with a easy victory over Erne Gaels in the sunshine on Sunday morning. Belcoo came out and managed to find the visitors net on four occasions in the opening 10minutes.
Within 40seconds of the throw in Brian Cox had the ball in the Erne Gaels net after good work from Ciarán Flaherty. Ronan Ferguson capitalised on a poor clearance from Stephen Ryder to knock over his first point. Ferguson then found the net and a close range free from John Carrigan meant Belcoo had registered 2-2 in the opening 5minutes. Erne Gaels did manage to pull back a goal and a point but Belcoo continued to look dangerous with every attack.
Kieran Leonard was next to find the net with a well taken goal before Niall McGovern was brought down for a penalty. Paul McGrath stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to leave the score at 4-2 to 1-2 after 10minutes.
In the closing quarter of the first half Belcoo kicked 5 unanswered scores, Ciarán Flaherty (2), Kieran Leonard, Mark McGovern and Ryan Dolan all getting on the scoresheet to ensure Belcoo took a commanding 4-7 to 1-2 lead in at the interval.
The second half was a more even affair as Belcoo seemed to take the foot of the pedal. Erne Gaels got in for some easy scores while Seamus Ryder and Barry McCann tapped over some frees. McCann was to find the net in the early part of the half but a serious comeback never looked likely.
Kieran Leonard and Ciarán Flaherty both kicked three second half points while Seamus Conlon and Ronan Ferguson also contributed for Belcoo. Brian Cox registered the Belcoo goal after good work from Ronan Ferguson with 10 minutes remaining to kill off the tie.
In truth it was a comfortable win for the league leaders with their quick start building the platform for the success. Their is a break in the league for two weeks due to championship quarter finals next weekend. Erne Gaels will need to pick themselves up following this defeat as the face Enniskillen Gaels as they look to reach the semi finals.
