JUNIORS: Belcoo 2-11 St. Joseph's 1-10
Sep. 27, 2010
Belcoo have advanced into the league final following a four point victory over St. Joseph's Ederney on Sunday lunchtime. They will face Teemore in the decider on Saturday 16th October at 7.30pm under lights in Brewster Park.
Sunday's game with St. Joseph's was somewhat bizarre, as Belcoo trailed by 10points at one stage in the opening period following numerous misplaced passes, fumbled possessions and sloppy play in general with possible hangovers and lack of sleep to blame for the error ridden first half. It took Belcoo 35minutes to waken from their atrocious start but they built up some momentium and having got themselves back into the game substitute Nevan Higgins had a deflected effort find the net 5minutes from time to give Belcoo the lead for the first time.
St. Joseph's started the brighter and a number of swift attacks led to well taken scores from Declan McCusker, two from Christopher Snow and a treble from Stephen Gillogly opened up a 0-6 to 0-0 lead after 20minutes. In truth Belcoo could have found themselves further behind as Ederney kicked 4 or 5 wides from scoreable positions while an attempted fisted goal just missed the post.
Declan Leonard advanced from wing half back to register Belcoo's first score in the 21st minute, this score was greeted with a loud cheer from the home support as it was only Belcoo's second attempt at a score having struggled to get the ball past the halfway line in the opening half. Snow responded with a free kick before St. Joseph's scored a freakish goal. A high ball into the area was fumbled by Aidan Leonard in Belcoo goals and trickled over the line to leave it St. Joseph's 1-8 Belcoo 0-1 coming to half time. A 28th minute Ian Corrigan 45 and a 29th minute Jonathan Feeley point from play meant St. Joseph's led 1-8 to 0-3 at the interval.
A score directly from the throw in edged the away side nine points ahead but from this point on Belcoo took control. Patrick Burns and Jonathan Feeley landed good scores from play before Feeley rattled the net in the 40th minute to give the large home support some hope of a revival. Burns knocked over a free kick to reduce the deficit to three points.
Aidan McGrath then had a great chance to level the game when he found himself one on one with the St.Joseph's keeper however the keeper saved low to his right and kept three points between the sides. Patrick Burns kicked a long range point from play and Declan Leonard got forward to kick his second score. With only one between the sides and 10 minutes remaining Ederney finally steadied themselves and after overturning a number of Belcoo attacks they did mange to register a score from a close range Christopher Snow free kick. Patrick Burns responded with a free kick for Belcoo before Higgins struck the all important goal.
Now leading 2-9 to 1-10 with only 5minutes remaining Belcoo made sure of victory with two late points from Jonathan Feeley who had an impressive second half. All in all Belcoo got the result they required however they went the hard way about getting it.
