SENIORS: Tempo 0-11 Belcoo 1-10
Oct. 17, 2010
Belcoo have guaranteed their place in the league semi finals following this hard fought victory in Tempo on Sunday. Wing half forward Kieran Leonard returned to top form with an impressive 7 point haul for Belcoo but this game will be remembered for a contraversial penalty award with 5minutes remaining.
Gavin Leonard latched onto a Sean McNulty pass and as he bore down on goal, Ryan Keenan fouled him. The incident did seem to occur just outside the penalty area but the referee deemed it to have happened inside the large rectangle and he awarded Belcoo the spot kick despite Tempo's objections. Paul McGrath stepped up and dispatched the penalty past Matthew Jackson in the Tempo goals. This goal put Belcoo 1-8 to 0-9 in front after Tempo had previously come from behind to lead.
Belcoo started the brighter and it was two Kieran Leonard frees and a fisted point from Gavin Leonard that had them 0-3 to 0-1 up at the quarter mark. Brian Jackson had registered Tempo's point from a free. Jackson added another free before Kieran Leonard struck two more Belcoo scores, one from play and another free. Ryan Keenan and Ryan Bogue got themselves on the scoresheet for Tempo while in the closing moments of the first half Belcoo broke from defence and a sweeping move ended with a Shane McCabe point. At half time it was Tempo 0-4 Belcoo 0-6.
In the opening ten minutes of the second half Belcoo squandered several scorable opportunites while Tempo who had survived this period of pressure without conceding a score managed to break forward and score three unanswered points to take the lead for the first time. Daryl Keenan, Damian Kelly and Ryan Keenan all finding the target for the home side.
It was again Kieran Leonard who pointed a good score from play for the visitors however Brian Jackson and Ryan Keenan added more scores for Tempo who had outscored Belcoo 5 to 1 in the second half to this juncture. Kieran Leonard was on target again before Belcoo got the penalty from McGrath to regain the lead.
Ryan Keenan reduced the deficit to one before Leonard knocked over a free and McCabe pointed from distance. With Tempo needing a goal as they trailed 1-10 to 0-10, Ryan Bogue had to settle for a point when he was crowded out by the Belcoo defence. In the end Belcoo held out for their first win in four games.
