U14's Win Feile na n-Og Opener
Mar. 26, 2011
Belcoo U14's recorded a 5-8 to 4-8 victory over Roslea on Saturday in the Feile na n-Og Preliminary Round at Teemore.
With perfect playing conditions it was Belcoo who started the match very strongly. In the opening quarter Belcoo had registered 2-4. They opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a well taken goal by full forward James McAloon whilst Conor McAloon knocked over a good score as Belcoo continued to apply pressure to the Roslea defense. Aaron Duffy registered Belcoo's second goal in the 10th minute and points followed from Matthew McAloon (2) and James Gillespie.
Roslea kept themselves in the match with a number of good scores however as the first half drew to a close Belcoo's Shane Doherty lobbed the Roslea goalkeeper with a long range effort to grab Belcoo's third goal. Matthew McAloon registered his 3rd point of the game, this one coming from distance meaning Belcoo led at the interval 3-5 to 0-5.
Roslea were quick out of the blocks in the second half and scored a goal within two minutes of the restart. Wayward shooting caused Belcoo several problems in the early part of the 2nd half until Conor McAloon broke clear and tapped over Belcoo's opening score of the half.
Roslea were always dangerous and kept in touch with a further two points however a converted penalty from Matthew McAloon along with a point from play by the same player increased Belcoo's lead, it was now 4-7 to 1-7. The next score was Belcoo's 5th goal. This came from James Gillespie who found the net in the 48th minute to open up a 12point lead.
Two quickfire goals brought Roslea right back into the game as they looked that bit fitter than the Belcoo lads who began to tire. Aaron Duffy knocked over what would be Belcoo's last score with 10minutes remaining. The Belcoo defense was under severe pressure in the last few minutes but some frantic defensive work from Gary Doherty and Eoin Shiels in particular ensured they held on to their lead and advance to the next round of the competition.
Belcoo will now play Irvinestown in the next round on Saturday 2nd April.
The Belcoo team was as follows - Gerard McHugh, Gary Doherty, Andrew Ferguson, Daire Keaney, Eoin Shiels, Michael Doherty, Jonathan Stewart, Matthew McAloon, Conor McAloon, James Gillespie, Aaron Duffy, James McAloon, Shane Doherty. The playing subs were JP Carney and Colm Furey.
The Belcoo Under 14 Managers and players wish Aaron McTernan a speedy recovery from his recent accident. We all look forward to seeing you in the sky blue shirt in the very near future.
