Under 21 League Final: Aughadrumsee 1-8 v 2-15 Belcoo
The final of the 2010 Fermanagh Under 21 Competition was played at Teemore on Sunday. Belcoo went into the final as firm favourites and were bidding for a three in a row. However, Aughadrumsee were the reigning 2010 minor champions and were not going to allow Belcoo have it all their own way.
It was Belcoo who started the game much the better and by 10 minutes were leading by 1-2 to no score. Gavin Leonard got the Belcoo goal and Jonathan Feeley and Ronan Ferguson supplied the points. Aughadrumsee steadied the ship with two points before Stephen Nolan took an excellent score from distance in the 16th minute. Nolan was playing very well and was deputising in midfield as a result of the unavailability of County Under-21 star Brian Cox.
Aughadrumsee kept in touch with another point before Feeley converted a free on the 23rd minute to leave it 1-4 to 0-3. Two minutes later, Ferguson fired over another point but again Aughadrumsee immediately replied for what was their last score of the first half. In the closing moments of the half Belcoo became totally dominant at the back with excellent defending from their captain Ryan McGovern, Ryan Leonard and Barry McGovern which limited the opposition to only a few chances.
By the interval Belcoo were on dominating all sectors of the field. Their forwards were getting hard to handle and another goal from Gavin Leonard on the 28th minute followed by two Ferguson points left Belcoo leading 2-7 to 0-4 at the break.
From the restart Belcoo were first out of the blocks again and got on the scoreboard early with an excellent individual point from Jonathan Feeley who fired over from an acute angle in the 33rd minute. Aughadrumsee converted a free in the 35th minute before Belcoo scored four points from play without reply. Amongst the scorers were Shain Gallagher, Niall Cullen, Gavin Leonard and a long range Patrick Burns effort.
Aughadrumsee did not lie down and were rewarded for their efforts on the 52nd minute with a goal, which was quickly followed by another point. An hopes of a revival were dashed in the 55th minute, Aughadrumsee had a great chance to close the gap even further from the penalty spot, fortunately for Belcoo, the penalty was missed.
Following this let off Belcoo went on to score a further three points. Ferguson scored a free on the 57th minute and points from play from Feeley and Barry McGovern ended this contest. Another good team performance from the Belcoo lads and it was left to Captain Ryan McGovern to collect the trophy.
The team was as follows - Aidan Leonard, Ryan Leonard, Ryan McGovern, James Stewart, Eoin Leonard, Barry McGovern (0-1), Patrick Burns (0-1), Stephen Nolan (0-1), Shane Gallagher (0-1), Ronan Ferguson (0-5), Niall Cullen (0-1), Jonathan Feeley (0-4) and Gavin Leonard (2-1). The subs for the final included Martin Corrigan, Kieran Conlon, Michael Leonard, Brendan McPartland and Seimi Rafferty. Credit must also go to Connor Leonard and Gary McNulty who have both excellent recent managerial records with the Under 21 and Junior teams.
