JUNIORS: LATE TEMPO RALLY SEES OFF BELCOO
Apr. 16, 2011
JUNIORS: Belcoo 0-10 v 0-15 Tempo
Belcoo Juniors suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday evening when they lost by 5 points to Tempo. The Belcoo team was missing 7 starters from last weeks victory over Teemore but the boys who came into the side put in a good performance. Unfortunately for them, Tempo finished the game stronger and they were more clinical in front of the goals in the closing stages allowing them to run out winners.
Belcoo opened the scoring in the second minute when centre half back Shain Gallagher made a surging run through the heart of the Tempo defense and fired over from 30yards. Tempo leveled within a minute as midfielder John Pacham, a recent recruit from County Meath knocked over a score from distance. Gallagher was again on the scoreboard as he finished off an excellent Belcoo move which started from corner back Martin Corrigan. Following some swift interchanges Gallagher collected the ball and with the aid of the post registered his second score.
The impressive Eunan McCann operating at wing forward for Tempo kicked his first of the day from long range to level proceedings in the 8th minute. Patrick Burns pointed from a free kick before Burns’ quick thinking found Stephen Nolan with time and space to chip over a point which pushed Belcoo into a 2point lead midway through the half.
Tempo registered the next three points as Niall McCusker, Eunan McCann and Kieran Murphy all scored while Belcoo responded with two points from play from Niall Cullen. Injury time scores from McCann and midfielder Thomas Campbell meant Tempo led 0-7 to 0-6 at the interval.
Eunan McCann and Patrick Burns traded points in the opening minutes of the second half but two Niall McCusker points and a long distance Stephen Nolan score meant at the mid point of the half the visitors led 0-10 to 0-8. At this stage Belcoo were still in with a chance of victory, Gerard Mellor was now in midfield and battling hard while Kevin McPartland was becoming more involved. Belcoo had a good five minute spell but they were unable to register any scores, substitute Eunan Mullally had the best opportunity but his left footed effort went wide.
With Belcoo having failed to reduce the deficit, Tempo extended their lead with a McCann free kick and a magnificent outside of the boot effort from Pacham. Patrick Burns struck over a 45 following Ian Corrigan’s goalbound effort was deflected wide. Thomas Campbell and Eunan McCann completed the scoring for Tempo while Patrick Burn registered his fourth point of the day late on for Belcoo.
In the end, it was a defeat for Belcoo however the management can be pleased with their showing considering the number of missing players. A lot of players have had there chance to impress over the past two games while Michael Leonard returned from a lengthy absence through injury and put in an impressive performance at corner back in this game. Next Saturday Belcoo travel to Derrygonnelly for a 6.30pm throw in.
