SENIORS: BELCOO FIGHTBACK TO WIN OPENER

Box Score

Apr. 17, 2011

SENIORS: Lisnaskea 1-9 v 1-13 Belcoo

Belcoo had to come from 5 points down to win this Senior League Division 1 opener on Sunday afternoon. In what was a very open game of football on a humid day, it took a second half surge from Belcoo to see them collect the two points on offer. Corner Forward Ronan Ferguson was in great form kicking 1-8 of which 1-6 was from play for the visitors.

Belcoo had the better of the early exchanges; Ferguson opened the scoring after collecting the ball from Ciaran Flaherty and fired over. Jonathan Feeley got Belcoo’s second score after the nipped in along the end line and fisted a point while Ferguson added another from an acute angle to give Belcoo a 3 point lead after 7minutes. Paul Curran responded with a good score for Lisnaskea before they got their goal. Niall Leonard lost possession as he attempted to work the ball out of defense and after Brian Og Maguire collected the loose ball, he fed it to Ryan O’Keefe who made no mistake firing low under the advancing James McGrath in the Belcoo goals.

Lisnaskea began to dominate possession and with the aid of some great overlapping runs midfielder Conor Curran found himself free on two occasions to increase Lisnaskea’s lead. Kieran Leonard knocked over a point for Belcoo midway through the half after a swift interchange of passes between Paul McGrath and Jonathan Feeley but it was Lisnaskea who were on top at this stage. Further scores from an O’Keefe free kick, Daniel Kille and Mark Little meant Lisnaskea led 1-6 to 0-4 after 25minutes.

Belcoo got themselves back into the game over the closing 5minutes. Again it was Ferguson who kicked two more from play while Ciaran Flaherty finished a good move with a left footed score. In this spell of Belcoo pressure they had a penalty claim as Niall McGovern went down in the area but referee John Moane waved play on and at the interval Lisnaskea led 1-6 to 0-7.

Upon the restart it was again Belcoo who started fast, Sean McNulty kicked an excellent point from distance to reduce the deficit before Belcoo managed to find the net. A move which started in the left corner back position and after the ball had been worked through 6 or 7 different players’ hands, Feeley slipped it to Ferguson who came in from the left wing and beat Barry McGoldrick in the Skea goals at the near post. This goal catapulted Belcoo into a 1-8 to 1-6 lead and they extended this through a Ferguson free kick.

Aidy Little managed to register Lisnaskea first score of the half some 10minutes in but Ferguson again replied for Belcoo. Substitute Niall McElroy pointed a nice score for the home side but Ferguson was again on target for Belcoo. As the game entered the last 10minutes Belcoo held a 1-11 to 1-8. Lisnaskea had a great chance for a goal following a sweeping move up the field Aidy Little found himself bearing down on goals but he fired wide when well placed. Daniel Kille tapped over a free for the home side and Ciaran Flaherty knocked over his second score of the day to keep 3 between the sides. Ferguson added a close range free with the last kick to secure a four point victory for Belcoo.

In what was an entertaining season opener, both teams had their spells of dominance, in the first period when Lisnaskea were on top Stephen Carters and Mark Little were heavily involved but in the second period the Belcoo defense laid the foundations to the fight back as they stifled the Lisnaskea attack on numerous occasions with corner back Ryan Leonard particularly impressive in this half. Brian Cox and Ryan Glancy had a great tussle at midfield throughout while in attack, Belcoo’s Jonathan Feeley proved great foil for Ferguson who will no doubt take the headlines for his individual tally of scores.

Team: James McGrath, Ryan McGovern, Niall Leonard, Ryan Leonard, Niall McGovern, Ryan Dolan, Emmet Scollan, Sean McNulty (0-1) Brian Cox, Paul McGrath, Ciaran Flaherty (0-2), Kieran Leonard (0-1). Gavin Leonard, Jonathan Feeley (0-1), Ronan Ferguson (1-8).
