JUNIORS RUE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
Apr. 23, 2011
JUNIORS: Derrygonnelly 1-11 v 1-9 Belcoo
Belcoo slipped to their second consecutive defeat in the Juniors on Saturday evening following a two point loss to a strong Derrygonnelly side. In the end some wayward shooting cost Belcoo as during periods of dominance they failed to get the scores their play deserved.
Derrygonnelly’s full forward Garvin McGinley registered two points for the home side in the opening 3minutes however Aaron Dolan fired over a fabulous score from way out on the left wing in-between McGinley’s two scores. Derrygonnelly were to find the net in the 5th minute when youngster Lee Jones collected the ball in the left corner, beat his man and fired high past Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals.
Belcoo regrouped from this rocky start and their defense began to get the upper hand. James Stewart and Martin Corrigan won possession on numerous occasions while Eoin Leonard was dictating the play from centre half back. After a well worked move Niall Cullen tossed over a point before Aaron Dolan found Ian Corrigan with a good ball and Corrigan drove the ball over the bar to leave it 1-2 to 0-3 after 12minutes.
At this stage Belcoo kicked 3wides in as many minutes with Darragh Timoney, Patrick Burns and Kevin McPartland all failing to hit the target when well placed. Derrygonnelly on the other hand added to their tally of points from two frees, Garvin McGinley and Kevin McGrath on target. Patrick Burns responded with a close range free for Belcoo and over the closing stages Stephen Nolan and Niall Cullen kicked scores for Belcoo with Kevin McGrath pointing for Derrygonnelly. Half Time: Derrygonnelly 1-5 v 0-6 Belcoo.
Belcoo tied the game within 6minutes of the restart. Patrick Burns kicked two scores, the first from play and the second a free kick. Over the next five minutes, Belcoo had the vast majority of possession, Eoin Leonard and Kevin McPartland were finding time and space but Belcoo were having problems making progress up front. Half time substitute Eunan Mullally was proving the main outlet but it was a struggle to get scores as Derrygonnelly defended well.
It took the home side 12minutes to open there account in this half. Declan Cassidy was the man to get the score while substitute Brendan Rasdale also knocked over a point. Belcoo again had a decent spell of possession midway through this half but like the first half 3wides and no score left Derrygonnelly's two point lead was still intact.
The home side had their best spell of the game and four points between the 47th and the 55th minute seen them move into a commanding position. Kevin McGrath, Garvin McGinley (2) and Lee Jones all on target. Now trailing by 1-11 to 0-8 Belcoo had to go searching for goals in the last 5minutes.
After a flowing full length of the field move Stephen Nolan got through on goal and his goalbound effort was almost certainly blocked by the foot of a defender. Belcoo vented their frustration towards referee John Crudden with Eunan Mullally and Ian Corrigan in particular spending a good 2minutes on the referee’s case but it was all to no avail. Patrick Burns kicked what looked like a consolation score with only minutes left but Shain Gallagher found the net in the 59th minute to give Belcoo hope of getting something from the game. A well worked interchange down the right flank ended up with Ian Corrigan who drilled the ball across the six yard line for Gallagher to nip in and fist to the net.
In the last attack of the game Belcoo almost got a match – winning goal but after some pinball in the Derrygonnelly goalmouth a defender was able to get the ball cleared and referee Crudden blew the final whistle.
In the end Derrygonnelly held on for the win but Belcoo will feel this was definitely a game that was there for the taking. Following a shaky start the Belcoo defense performed well however like the previous game, the forward line found it hard to get the scores required to secure a victory.
