Box Score

Apr. 24, 2011

SENIORS: Belcoo 0-6 v 0-11 Devenish

Belcoo slumped to a defeat in their first home senior game of the year as neighbours Devenish came down the road and left with a 5point victory. It was a disappointing display from the home side who failed to turn several attacking moves into scores and in the end the Garrison men were good value for there win.

Belcoo opened the scoring from a close range free after Niall McGovern was fouled; Ronan Ferguson tapped over the point. Devenish hit the next four scores, Joe O’Brien knocked over a great score from play before John O’Flanagan kicked two handy frees from the 14yard line straight in front of the goals. Joe O’Brien was again on target from play as Devenish established a 0-4 to 0-1 lead.

Belcoo were on top around the middle third midway through the 1st half, collecting several break balls but misplaced passes and handling errors meant scores were hard to come by.

Jonathan Feeley knocked over a point from the left wing in the 20th minute but John O’Flanagan was to kick another close range free to leave three between the sides with 5minutes remaining to the break.  Feeley wrangled his way past three defenders and managed to register a score for Belcoo amid protests of over carrying and Belcoo finished the half trailing 0-5 to 0-4 as Paul McGrath fired over a 45 with the last kick of the half.

Upon the resumption John O’Flanagan added to his tally via the post from his weaker right foot while Chris O’Brien also notched his first score of the day. Jonathan Feeley was proving Belcoo main scoring threat and after catching a high ball he turned and finished from an acute angle to reduce the deficit to two points. Devenish ahead 0-7 to 0-5.

The score stayed like this for a long time as Devenish missed 3 or 4 chances to extend their lead. Belcoo on the other hand were working the ball to the forty but struggling to make further progress as the Devenish defense were on top. The game was won however with 10minutes remaining, Devenish managed to get three points in as many minutes as they overturned Belcoo attacks and within seconds they had the ball over the bar at the other end. Kevin Ferguson, Joe O’Brien and Vincent O’Brien all registering scores for the visitors.

Over the closing moment Jonathan Feeley had a goalbound free kick deflected over for a point while Chris O’Brien pointed a free for Devenish to secure a 0-11 to 0-6 win for Devenish.
