U14s: Belcoo 3-10 v 2-3 Belnaleck

Belcoo secured a third straight victory in this U14 League following a 10point win in this Round 3 tie played at Belcoo on Wednesday 27th April. After winning without performing well the last time out against Derrylin, Belcoo produced a much improved display against Belnaleck to remain undefeated.

With that been said this was a much closer encounter than the score line suggested. Belcoo started the brighter with an early goal but after 15 minutes the two sides were tied at 1-1 each. Belnaleck took the lead on 18 minutes with a well taken goal but Belcoo came to life over the closing stages of the first half and they hit four unanswered points from play.

The Belcoo team was really playing well as a team and they were boosted by a number of brilliant saves by goalkeeper Jonathan Stewart which ensured they remained in the lead. Belcoo pressed hard over the last few minutes of the half and were rewarded with a goal on the stroke of half time. The half time score was Belcoo 2-5 Belnaleck 2-1.

It took both sides a good 10minutes to settle in the second half and after trading a point a piece Belcoo took control. Belnaleck could only muster a single point in the last 20minutes as the Belcoo defense stood firm. The Belcoo attack began to pick off scores and a third goal killed the game as a contest late on.

This was an excellent overall team performance from Belcoo who in the end were on top in all sectors of the field; the defenders were again outstanding with Gary Doherty in particular demonstrating how to play the full back role effectively as he caught numerous high balls under pressure from forwards. Belcoo’s instrumental midfielder Matthew McAloon was forced off having sustained an injury in the 50th minute and hopefully he will be back in action quickly as Belcoo travel to Aughadrumsee next Wednesday 4th May for there Round 4 game.

Team: Jonathan Stewart, Gary Doherty, Aaron Duffy, Eoin Shiels, Aaron McTernan, Brian Furey (0-1), Matthew McAloon (0-4), James Gillespie(1-1), Daire Keaney (0-1), Michael Doherty (1-0), Andrew Ferguson (1-2), Michael McGourty, James McAloon, Conor McAloon (0-1), Daniel Corrigan, Micheal O'Cofaigh, Shane Doherty and Colm Furey.
