JUNIORS WIN IN ROSLEA
May. 7, 2011
JUNIORS: Roslea 1-8 v 2-11 Belcoo
Belcoo collected their second Junior win of the season following a 6 point victory in Roslea on Saturday evening. Belcoo had the better of the opening period which seen them open up a 7point lead only for Roslea to stage a second half fight back, A converted Roslea penalty with 13minutes remaining meant the sides were locked at 1-7 a piece. At this stage it looked like the home side would go on and secure victory but it was Belcoo who finished the game on top and some late points and an Ian Corrigan goal ensured Belcoo returned home with the points.
In what was a quiet first quarter Patrick Burns opened the scoring in the 4th minute. Roslea’s first meaningful attack in the 6th minute brought a wonderful save from Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals. Leonard somehow got fingertips to Shane Murray’s goalbound effort to force it around the post.
Ian Corrigan drove over a point in the 12th minute for Belcoo before Enda Reilly pointed from Roslea. At the midway point of the half, Belcoo were dominating possession and keeping out Roslea’s attack with some excellent defensive work. The full back line of Ryan McGovern, Shane McAloon and James Stewart were all in fine form.
Jonathan Feeley making his first appearance since the opening round due to Senior commitments showed his class with a well taken goal after 16minutes. Gerard Mellor, Darragh Timoney and Aaron Dolan were all involved in the move before the ball was transferred into Feeley, who beat his man and rifled the ball into the Roslea net. Belcoo tagged on scores from a Patrick Burns free kick along with scores from play by Feeley and Stephen Nolan as they increased their lead, 1-5 to 0-1. On the stroke of half time Enda Reilly got his and Roslea’s second score of the match.
At the interval Belcoo introduced experienced duo Sean McNulty and Ryan Dolan to their side and both players seen plenty of ball in the early stages. The opening 10minutes was much like the start of the first half as both sides could only muster one point each. Paul McKenna who was operating at full back in the first half had moved out the field and he got on the end of a flowing Roslea attack to reduce the deficit while it was young Aaron Dolan who collected a breaking ball and drove forward 40yards before clipping the ball over for Belcoo.
Unfortunately Sean McNulty sustained what looks like a very bad back injury and he was forced off as Roslea started to have their spell of domination. Aidan Leonard was again forced to make an excellent save early in the second half when substitute Ryan McCormack hit a low shot, Leonard managed to get his right foot to it and a defender cleared the danger. Midfielder Aaron Mulligan floated over a score from distance whilst the increasingly influential Ryan McCormack tapped over a free. Patrick Burns responded with a free to leave it 1-7 to 0-5 after 45minutes.
Roslea continued to press forward as Belcoo struggled to turn ball in the middle sector, Mulligan was again on target from distance while the McCormack also pointed from play. Now with only a goal between the sides Roslea’s full forward Eamon Sherry collected a high ball in the Belcoo penalty area and with three men around him referee John Crudden deemed Sherry had been fouled and he awarded a penalty. Ryan McCormack stepped up and slotted the ball low into the bottom left corner to tie the game at 1-7 each.
Belcoo responded immediately as Shain Gallagher advanced forward and after a strong run he drove over for a point. McCormack again leveled matters with a point from play with 11minutes remaining.
Having had a poor 10minutes around the middle of the field, Belcoo began to come back into it and both Gerard Mellor and Patrick Burns won clean kickout which in turn set up two quick fire points for Belcoo. Jonathan Feeley registered the first while Kevin McPartland was on target with the second to open up a 1-10 to 1-8 lead.
The next few minutes seen Jonathan Feeley been forced off through injury as the Belcoo defense been well marshaled by Ryan McGovern and Ryan Dolan nullify the Roslea attack and maintain their sides two point advantage.
As the clock ticked towards full time Aaron Dolan kicked easily the best score of the day. A well worked move down the right wing involving Dolan and substitute Eunan Mullally seen the latter slip the ball to Dolan who from a seriously acute angle, managed to split the posts to give Belcoo a three point lead.
From the resulting kickout Dolan won possession and boar down on goal only to see his attempt for a fisted score rebound off the post, the ball was worked to Ian Corrigan who floated the ball beyond a despairing Gary Deery in the Roslea goals as he was helpless in stopping the ball finding the net. With this score victory was secured on a score of 2-11 to 1-8. The Juniors have no game now until Saturday 28th May where they will face current league leaders Devenish.
