U14's Survive Aughadrumsee Fightback
May. 9, 2011
U14’s: Aughadrumsee 1-12 v 2-10 Belcoo
Belcoo U14's have extended their winning start to 4wins from 4games but they had to withstand a late rally from Aughadrumsee to return winners in this Round 4 fixture. This game was played at a very wet Aughadrumsee on Wednesday 4th May 2011 and it was expected that joint leaders, Belcoo would win comfortably against the league's bottom side. However things were much tighter than expected as Aughadrumsee produced easily there best performance of the year to date.
The game started as per the script with Belcoo in complete control. Belcoo were quickly on the scoreboard with a goal and a point from midfielder, Matthew McAloon. Aughadrumsee scored their first point after 10 minutes from a free but they had to wait a further 10 minutes to register their next score. Belcoo continued with a number of unanswered points from the McAloon boys, Matthew and Conor before James McAloon added Belcoo's 2nd goal to put them into a commanding lead. Both teams exchanged a number of points before the break to leave the half time score Aughadrumsee 0-4 Belcoo 2-7.
The conditions really deteriorated in the second half and made playing conditions very difficult for both teams. In the next 15 minutes Belcoo and Aughadrumsee were more evenly matched with both teams managing a further 3 points each. However, in the final quarter of this match the Belcoo lads lost their shape entirely and could not add to their tally for the rest of the game.
Aughadrumsee began to grow in confidence and produced a spirited comeback over the closing quarter with a goal and several excellent points. In fact, things may have got worse for Belcoo if Daniel Corrigan deputising in the Belcoo goal hadn't saved a penalty 10 minutes from time. This resulted in a very nervous finish for the Belcoo team who were very relieved to hear the final whistle as they hung on to win by one point.
In truth this was a below par performance from Belcoo and indeed the Aughadrumsee players must have been very disappointed that they didn't get at least a draw from this game. For Belcoo, Eoin Shiels operating in the half back line produced a very good performance with young player Conor McAloon also looking lively and dangerous in front of the posts.
The Belcoo Players are well aware that they will need to improve significantly to compete with joint leaders Teemore in the round 5 tie at Belcoo on Wednesday 11th May, throw in at 7pm.
All players are asked to be at the changing rooms at 6.30pm on Wednesday
