HARPS FIGHTBACK TO TAKE POINTS
Jun. 3, 2011
SENIORS: Derrygonnelly 1-12 v 1-10 Belcoo
Belcoo returned to action after a 5 week break but it was not a winning return as Derrygonnelly fought back in the closing quarter to secure a two point victory on a glorious evening in Derrygonnelly.
With ideal playing conditions Belcoo started the brighter and they were quickly into a 3 point lead. Ciaran Flaherty got on the end of a well worked move to register the first score before Paul McGrath arrowed over a long range placed ball from the left wing. Jonathan Feeley added the visitors third score after collecting a neat ball 20yards from goal.
Derrygonnelly responded by hitting the net somewhat fortuitously after 8minutes. A loose pass out of the Belcoo defense was collected by Declan Cassidy, his long ranging pass found Stephen Burns who drove in along the end line and his attempted kick for a point floated into the top right hand corner of the Belcoo net. Ryan Jones added a free before John Carrigan leveled with a free for Belcoo.
John Carrigan added his second score of the game with a fine solo effort as he brushed off a number of defenders before splitting the post. Ryan Jones was to respond with two more free kicks to put the home side back in front midway through the half. Ronan Ferguson leveled matters for a third time before Belcoo manged to take the lead again. Paul McGrath won a kickout and drove forward 30yards before slipping the ball of to Ciaran Flaherty who made no mistake by tapping over from close range.
Flaherty was to find the net with a few minutes remaining in the half. Niall Leonard collected possession around the middle of the field and he played a great ball into Gavin Leonard who quickly transferred it to the on rushing Flaherty who beat one man before firing into the bottom corner from all of 25yards. This put Belcoo 1-7 to 1-3 in front but Ryan Jones, who accounted for all of Derrygonnelly’s points was to get another two, however one was hotly disputed, both umpires signaled a wide ball but referee Martin Higgins gave the score. Half Time Derrygonnelly 1-5 Belcoo 1-7.
Belcoo again were the quicker out of the blocks but some wayward shooting in the opening period of dominance meant Derrygonnelly were still within touching distance. Ronan Ferguson tapped over a close range free after Patrick Burns had been fouled while Jonathan Feeley accounted for Belcoo’s other score as they moved into a 4point lead. Barry McGrath had been introduced at half time for Derrygonnelly and he was to kick a great score with the outside of the boot to reduce the deficit to three.
Belcoo were again to fall foul of a refereeing decision, Ronan Ferguson skipped past his marker and from an acute angle he fisted a score, Mr. Higgins felt it wasn’t a legitimate fist and ruled out the score. From here, Derrygonnelly began to take a firm grip on the game. Barry McGrath knocked over two frees and Declan Cassidy also got on the scoresheet as Derrygonnelly drew level at 1-9 a piece.
Now, there was 10minutes remaining and Derrygonnelly continued to retain possession and work the ball into a scoreable positions, Paul Ward, Noel Gallagher and another Barry McGrath free extended the lead to three before Jonathan Feeley registered Belcoo’s first score in a long time. In the dying moments Paul Ward received a straight red card for Derrygonnelly but Belcoo had little time to make the extra man count and in the end Derrygonnelly held on to win by two points.
Belcoo will be disappointed to have lost this game following an impressive first half showing but unfortunately failure to kill the game off when they were on top in the early part of the second half allowed Derrygonnelly to take control and ultimately finish the game as winners. Ryan Leonard again was one of Belcoo’s best players while Niall McGovern had an impressive game at full back.
Belcoo have only one win from their first four games and they sit bottom of the table with Enniskillen Gaels. Belcoo play Newtown on Sunday in Belcoo, throw in is at 3.30pm. Two points is a must from this game.
