SENIORS BEATEN AGAIN

Box Score

Jun. 5, 2011

SENIORS: Belcoo 0-11 v 2-7 Newtown

Belcoo suffered a second two point defeat in the space of three days and now find themselves propping up the Senior Division 1 league with just one win from their opening 5 games.

Newtown got on the score sheet first from a long range point from Kevin Connolly but Ronan Ferguson responded with an effort from the left wing. Connolly added another, this time from a free before Ciaran Flaherty popped over for Belcoo.

After a sustain period of dominance around the middle third John Carrigan, Ciaran Flaherty and Ronan Ferguson all added scores as Belcoo moved into a three point lead. Newtown however where able to stem the tide and it was the visitors who now took command, they managed to register four quick scores which seen them retake the lead. On the stroke of half time Ronan Ferguson added a free and the sides went in level at 0-6 each.

Newtown found the net within 5minutes of the restart as John Mulligan fisted into an empty net. Belcoo responded well and were winning the vast majority of breaking balls in midfield. This possession won was turned into scores, firstly Stephen Maguire split the posts from an acute angle on the left wing, Paul McGrath started and finished a move with a score from distance while Ciaran Flaherty finished off a flowing move to draw the sides level again at 0-9 to 1-6.  Jaralth Jackson fired over his third free kick of the game for Newtown in the 42nd minute as they moved in front again.

Midway through the half Newtown were awarded a penalty which Ryan Carson converted, Belcoo responded through a Stephen Maguire free kick to put just a goal between the sides. Maguire was then fouled in the next attack and Belcoo were awarded a penalty of their own. Unfortunately for Belcoo they couldn’t convert as Ronan Ferguson stepped up but his very tame effort was easily stopped by the Newtown keeper.

Ferguson did manage to point a free to leave two points in it but over the last 13 minutes, neither side managed to register a score as the game became very error-ridden. In the end Newtown held out to inflict another defeat to Belcoo who now find themselves in an unusual position at the foot of the Division 1 table. Belcoo travel to St. Pat’s on Friday for a 8pm throw in knowing they need to start collecting a few points.
