SENIORS SECURE SECOND WIN IN STYLE

Box Score

Jun. 10, 2011

SENIORS: St. Pat's 0-11 v 0-20 Belcoo

Belcoo returned to winning ways with an extremely slick display of football in Donagh on Friday evening. Having failed to win in 4 games and sitting bottom of the league, Belcoo turned in there most impressive display of the year and racked up 20 scores in the process. Having held a three point lead at the break, Belcoo continued to press forward and eventually ran out comfortable winners.

After Belcoo had a few failed attempts to get the scoreboard ticking, St. Pat’s made their first attack of note count as Jamie Daly strode forward and registered the opening score.  Stephen Maguire responded with a close range free in the 6th minute as the game took time to get going.

The next score didn’t arrive until the 15th minute when Paul McGrath finished a move with a long range point from play and within a minute Stephen Maguire added another from play. St. Pat’s hit the front following three scores in a row, Pat Cadden blased over before he added a free while Gary Maguire also split the points.

Belcoo hit a purple patch over the closing period of the opening half, Stephen Maguire who was proving a handful throughout was ably assisted by Jonathan Feeley and Ronan Ferguson in the inside forward line and St. Pat’s were struggling to contain them. Jonathan Feeley kicked 4 points in the last five minutes of the half with 3 coming from play, the highlight a well worked move down the right involving Ryan Dolan, Brian Cox, Paul McGrath and Stephen Nolan with Feeley firing over from long range. Ferguson also added two points from play as Belcoo moved into a 0-9 to 0-4 lead. St. Pat’s did manage to get two late free kicks to reduced the deficit to 3 at the interval. Half Time: St. Pat’s 0-6 Belcoo 0-9

In the opening half Ryan Leonard, Ryan Dolan and Sean McNulty in the Belcoo defense all made some excellent interventions while St. Pat’s Shane McDermott was at the heart of any good work from the home side.

Upon the restart Belcoo extended their lead, Gavin Leonard fisted the opening score before he added a second and a third from distance to push Belcoo 0-12 to 0-6 ahead. After a scrappy five minute spell Brian Cox knocked over another Belcoo score before Cadden tapped over two frees for St. Pat’s.

Cox along with John Carrigan were beginning to dominate midfield while Paul McGrath was winning a lot of breaking ball. Feely and Maguire added frees but St. Pat’s managed a mini fightback to get themselves within four points thanks to more Pat Cadden frees and a point from McDermott. With 10minutes remaining Belcoo led 0-15 to 0-11 and it was the visitors who finished the stronger.

Patrick Burns, Jonathan Feeley, Paul McGrath, Feeley again and Niall Leonard all knocked over scores from play in the closing minutes to round off an impressive win for Belcoo.
