U14's Boys Reach League Final

Box Score

Jun. 12, 2011

U14’s: Belcoo 6-3 Devenish 4-4

This game was played at a very blustery and wet Belcoo on Sunday 12th June 2011. Belcoo only needed a draw to advance to the league final while a win for Devenish would see them advance to the final at Belcoo's expense.

Belcoo played with a very strong wind advantage in the first half. Yet again Belcoo were slow to start and went behind after 4 minutes to a Peter Leonard (Devenish half forward) goal. However, this was to be the only Devenish score of the half. The Belcoo lads began to get into the game and on 10 minutes they grabbed a goal scored by the young corner forward Colm Furey.

Belcoo aided by the significant wind took complete control for the rest of the half and got a further 3 goals from their influential midfielder Matthew McAloon (2) and from their busy half back, Eoin Shiels. Belcoo continued with 2 further unanswered points from the lively James Gillespie and 10 year old Conor McAloon. This left Belcoo in a commanding lead.  It is fair to give recognition to Belcoo centre half back, Andrew Ferguson for his excellent marksmanship of the main Devenish playmaker, Peter Leonard in the first half. The half time score was Belcoo 4-2 Devenish 1-0.

The Belcoo lads expected an Devenish backlash in the 2nd half and they were not wrong. Devenish took advantage of the strong wind and scored a goal from Peter Leonard within 2 minutes of the restart. The same player was to get the bulk of the Devenish scores in the 2nd half including a further 2 goals. Nevertheless, the Belcoo lads regrouped and Brian Furey got to grips with the Devenish number 11.

Belcoo battled hard all the way through the final 30 minutes and produced some excellent teamwork and superb defending. Further goals were scored by Matthew and Conor McAloon and a final point from Matthew McAloon assured the young O'Rahilly's of a league final place on Wednesday evening.

At the Final whistle it was celebration for Belcoo and disappointment for the young Devenish lads. This was an excellent all round performance for Belcoo but praise must also go to Gary Doherty and Aaron McTernan for their fantastic defensive displays. Belcoo now play Erne Gaels in the league decider on Wednesday 15th June in Derrygonnelly at 7pm.
