SENIORS: GAELS SECURE VITAL WIN
Jul. 7, 2011
SENIORS: Belcoo 2-10 v 3-11 Enniskillen Gaels
In this Senior League Division 1 re-fixture between two of the sides struggling at the bottom of the league this season it was the Gaels who would come out winners by 4 points. Following the early exchanges it looked like Belcoo were in complete control but after conceding two poor goals late in the opening half, the visiting Gaels side got into a lead which they never lost, despite Belcoo getting level on a number of occasions.
Belcoo started extremely well, playing some good flowing football and they had established a 5 point lead by the 15th minute. Gavin Leonard was first to register from a long distance point before Paul McGrath fisted a point and Stephen Maguire added a free. Neil Cox responded for the Gaels when he flicked a long ball over the bar however this was as good as it got for the Gaels in the first quarter.
Belcoo continued to press forward and a weak Stephen Maguire effort dropped in on top of Chris Breen in the Enniskillen goals, Breen made a hash of a routine catch and the ball ended up in the net behind him. Enniskillen’s wing back Conor McAleer advanced forward and drove over from distance with the outside of the boot but Gavin Leonard responded to leave it 1-4 to 0-2.
The Gaels, who had struggled to get a foothold in the game managed to get more joy over the closing minutes in the 1st half. Two goals in 4minutes turned the game on its head, a mishit Belcoo clearance from Seamus Conlon fell to Neil Cox who slipped the ball to Brendan Rogers to dispatch into the roof of the net past Ian Corrigan. Moments later Rory Rafferty danced in from the right wing and his tame shot of a point, dropped in over Ian Corrigan’s head and into the net. It was now 2-2 to 1-4 and Matthew Keenan added three more Gaels points before the half, one from play. Belcoo’s sole response was from Paul McGrath after Shane McCabe had supplied a great pass. Half Time: Belcoo 1-5 v 2-6 Enniskillen.
Upon the restart it was again Belcoo who started well but they squandered a number of good scoring chances and it wasn’t until the 6th minute before they did manage to register a score. This score was to be a goal, some quick thinking from a free kick by Shane McCabe and Paul McGrath seen McGrath get in on goal and slide the ball under the advancing Chris Breen to reduce the deficit to just one point. Within a minute the sides were level when Shane McCabe knocked over from the right wing.
Enniskillen reshuffled when James McKenna went off with an injury and substitute Mark O’Callaghan was to prove influential around the middle over the closing period. Matthew Keenan steadied the ship for the Gaels with a number of free kicks while Gavin Leonard and Kieran Leonard scores seen the sides level again. Keenan was again on target from a free and again Gavin Leonard responded after a driving run and shot.
With the game now into the last 5minutes Matthew Keenan added the score of the game from out on the left wing before he tapped over a close range free kick. Gavin Leonard bore down on goals for Belcoo but his goalbound effort rose over the bar to leave just a point between the side at 2-11 to 2-10.
Enniskillen were awarded a penalty with 2minutes remaining, Neil Cox was wrestled to the ground by Belcoo’s goalkeeper Ian Corrigan and Matthew Keenan stepped up and slotted the ball into the net to secure a vital win for the visitiors.
Belcoo will be disappointed to have lost this game after such a good start and they now find themselves propping up the division. They must regroup quickly as they play St. Joseph’s on Tuesday 12th July at 7.30pm.
