Late Penalty Sends Juniors Top
Jul. 9, 2011
JUNIORS: Belcoo 2-10 v 0-14 Derrygonnelly
There was late drama in this Erne Cup Division 1 league game between these two teams at the top of the table. Deep into injury time the impressive Aaron Dolan collected a ball 40 yards from goal on the right wing and having evaded three challenges he was upended in the penalty area. Jonathan Feeley dispatched the spot kick to secure a two point win for Belcoo with what was the last action of the game.
Derrygonnelly will be disappointed to lose this game having led from the 25th minute to stoppage time but in the opening exchanges it was Belcoo who dominated after they weathered the early storm from the visitors. Within 10seconds of the throw in, the lively Lee Jones had fired Derrygonnelly in front. Jones then collected a long ball from Archie Greene and it took a wonderful save from Aidan Leonard to deny the young forward a goal on 3minutes.
In Belcoo’s first meaningful attack, they managed to register a score, a quick free by Patrick Burns to Jonathan Feeley seen the latter split the posts in the 4th minute. Moments later it was another well worked free which seen Feeley point again, this time Aaron Dolan with the assist. Feeley was again on target in the 7th minute after Ian Corrigan and Aaron Dolan combined to slip him in.
Derrygonnelly responded when wing back Paddy McKenna advanced forward to fire over, this score proved the catalyst for a 5minute period of dominance. The Harps picked up several breaking balls and points from play from Lee Jones, Conor Duffy and Lee Jones followed to see Derrygonnelly led 0-5 to 0-3 after 13minutes.
Belcoo got back into the lead with a goal from Jonathan Feeley. A sweeping move down the left wing ended with Kevin McPartland who treaded a great ball into Feeley, who turned his man and fired into the roof of the net despite the Derrygonnelly keeper getting a strong hand to the ball. Aidan McGrath added a score from play as Belcoo opened up a two point lead in the 20th minute.
Over the closing 10minutes of an entertaining half Conal Jones, Connor Duffy (2), Kevin McGrath (2) all registered for Derrygonnelly before Patrick Burns hit Belcoo’s sole response from a free with the last kick of the half. Half Time Score: Belcoo 1-5 v 0-10 Derrygonnelly.
The second period was a lot more stop start. In the opening 10minutes only Conal Jones had managed a score to increase the Harps lead to three. Francie McGurl extended the lead further before Belcoo, who had a strong wind in their backs, got on the score sheet via a Patrick Burns free kick.
Midway through the half Belcoo began to collect the breaks they failed to get in the first half. Gerard Mellor and Ian Corrigan got in on a few while Seamus Conlon took a great clean ball from a kick out. Martin Corrigan picked out Jonathan Feeley with a cross field ball and Feeley duly added a score before some strong running by Conlon seen the midfielder set up Feeley for another from play to reduce the deficit to just one point at 0-12 to 1-8.
Into the final 5 minutes and centre half back Francie McKenna strode forward and added a score for Derrygonnelly but late frees from Jonathan Feeley and Patrick Burns leveled matters. Francie McGurl put Derrygonnelly into the level deep into stoppage time but referee Martin McBrien gave Belcoo one last attack and Aaron Dolan’s run and upheaval in the penalty area gave Feeley the chance to win it and he managed to hit the net from 11metres to give Belcoo a 2-10 to 0-14 victory.
The next Junior outing is the Championship against holders Roslea on Thursday evening in Maguiresbridge. Throw in is at 7.30pm.
