SENIORS COME GOOD IN SECOND HALF

SENIORS: Belcoo 3-10 v 1-9 St. Joseph’s

The Seniors secured an important victory on Tuesday evening when they overcame St. Joseph’s in Belcoo by 7points. On an night where playing conditions were ideal it wasn’t until the middle of the second half where Belcoo produced some great attacking play and fired in three goals which seen off the opposition.

In what was a poor opening 30minutes, the visitors registered the first score from a Darren McCusker free kick while moments later Stephen Maguire did likewise for Belcoo. Kieran Leonard completed a good move with a well taken point but Christopher Snow fired over an equaliser.

It was Ederney who had the better of the remainder of the half but some sturdy defending, last ditch tackling and pressure on the kicker by Belcoo prevented their opponents from registering scores. It was actually Belcoo who in their few ventures up the field managed to get on the scoreboard. Stephen Maguire knocked over a point from play on the right wing before going off injured, Shane McCabe clipped over a 45 while Kieran Leonard was unlucky to see his shot at goal go wide.

Belcoo led 0-4 to 0-2 as the game approached the interval but scores from Darren McCusker and Paul McCusker drew the sides’ level. In the last attack of the half, Ryan Dolan won possession and after some short passes down the right wing the ball was worked back to Seamus Conlon who fired over a great score from distance. Half Time: Belcoo 0-5 v 0-4 St. Joseph’s.

Belcoo began the second period well and Jonathan Feeley tapped over two frees before Niall Leonard also split the post. St. Joseph’s did register two scores but Belcoo held a two point lead after 40minutes before they produced some their best football so far this year as they carved open the visiting defense on a number of occasions.

Seamus Conlon was dominating midfield while Sean McNulty, Stephen Nolan and Niall Leonard were quickly onto any loose ball. Paul McGrath and Shane McCabe were providing great ball into the forward line and within a 90second spell Belcoo had hit the net twice.

The first goal came after a Jonathan Feeley sideline ball was well taken by Patrick Burns on the edge of the square, Burns turned and his shot beat the goalkeeper however a managed to block the ball on the goal-line only for the ball to fall at the feet of  Ian Corrigan who slide the ball into the unguarded goal. In the next attack Belcoo were awarded a free kick, McCabe took the kick quickly to Kieran Leonard who fired into the roof of the net past Stiofan McCusker in the St.Joseph’s goal.

Now, with Belcoo leading 2-8 to 0-6, Jonathan Feeley extended their lead with a point from play in the 47th minute. Ederney managed to respond with two points of their own, Christopher Snow on target from a placed ball while Paul McCusker kicked a great score from distance.

With 8minutes remaining Belcoo killed the game as a contest with a third goal, a high ball was fielded by Paul McGrath 20yards from goal and McGrath slipped the ball to the on-rushing Gavin Leonard who made no mistake rifling the ball into the roof of the net from close range to leave it 3-9 to 0-8.

Frees were traded by Christopher Snow and Ronan Ferguson before a long ball into the square by John Irvine was misjudged by Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals giving Ederney a consolation goal. From the kick out referee Enda McBrien blew to final whistle to give Belcoo an all important win.

The next Senior outing is an away game with Roslea on Saturday 16th July at 7pm.
