JUNIORS LIMP OUT OF CHAMPIONSHIP
Jul. 14, 2011
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Roslea 0-3 v 0-4 Belcoo
This Quarter Final tie was a repeat of last seasons Championship Final and like that final it was Roslea who came out on top. The Shamrocks eased to a comfortable victory in the second half as they produced far more slick attacking moves in comparison to the laboured and ineffective Belcoo attack.
The heavy downpour which continued throughout the opening half meant the football on show wasn’t great but it was Roslea who adapted better to the conditions and seen themselves take a 0-5 to 0-1 lead into the break. Aaron Mulligan and Jonathan Feeely traded scores from placed balls early in the game before Roslea took complete command of the final 20minutes.
As Belcoo struggled to get out of their own half, Roslea were able to turnover numerous balls and register scores. Mulligan landed a second free while Ryan McCormack kicked one from the opposite side. Midfielder Daniel Mohan kicked two fantastic scores from distance but Belcoo will not have been too disappointed to go in 4points down considering they hadn’t got going in the opening period.
The second half was 5minutes old when Aaron Mulligan knocked over another placed ball but Belcoo responded with the one good move they had during the game. Ryan McGovern intercepted a Roslea attack before finding Seamus Conlon, Conlon found Ian Corrigan who quickly slipped the ball to Burns who fired over. Jonathan Feeley added another score for Belcoo but these two Belcoo efforts were cancelled out by the accurate Mulligan who stroked over from a long range free and by a fisted score from wing forward Niall Cosgrove.
Substitute Philip Leonard scored following a good run to reduce the deficit to four at 0-8 to 0-4 with 16minutes remaining. This was as good as it got for Belcoo, they failed to score in the remainder of the game. Roslea on the other hand gradually pulled away as they maintained possession for long periods and finished well worked moves with some nice scores. Centre half forward Brendan Sherlock pointed from play and Aaron Mulligan was again on target from a free. A swift exchange of passes around the middle seen Roslea break forward in numbers and Sherlock was able to tap over from close range to make it 0-11 to 0-4.
Belcoo then had both Seamus Conlon and Shain Gallagher dismissed for second bookable offences and any faint hopes of a comeback were dashed as Mulligan added his 6th free before he landed the score of the night from play.
Roslea advance to the Semi Finals while Belcoo will turn their attention to ensuring the finish in the top two as they look to retain the league title they won last year. On a night were the majority of men in Blue under-performance, only Shane McAloon and Ryan Dolan will take comfort from their displays in the defense.
