ROSLEA SEE OFF 14MAN BELCOO
Jul. 17, 2011
SENIORS: Roslea 0-12 v 0-7 Belcoo
Roslea managed to secure victory in this Senior League Division 1 tie despite a battling second half display from Belcoo’s 14men. A late save from the Roslea goalkeeper denied Shane McCabe a goal which would have left an interesting final few minutes. Roslea held a 0-5 to 0-3 lead at the interval and within 5minutes of the restart Seamus Conlon received a straight red card which meant the visitors faced an uphill struggle to get anything from this particular game.
In the early exchanges Sean Quigley and Jonathan Feeley exchanged free kicks before Quigley added another and Liam Lynch fired over from play. With difficult playing conditions, the football wasn’t brilliant however both sides continued to play their attacking brand of football. Seamus Quigley was introduced and immediately knocked over a long range free to extend Roslea’s lead to 0-4 to 0-1.
Belcoo managed to register the next two scores, Ronan Ferguson was on target with both, the first a close range free and the second an excellent score from out on the right wing. Belcoo’s Kieran Leonard forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half and towards the end Sean Quigley registered his third of the day to ensure the hosts lead 0-5 to 0-3 at the break.
Belcoo had the advantage of a stiff breeze in the second half and would have been happy to just be two behind at the interval however the early exit of Conlon allowed Roslea to deploy Peter Lynch in a sweeper role which hindered Belcoo’s supply line to the inside forwards.
Seamus Quigley registered the first score of the half but Belcoo rallied despite the fact they were a man down. Ronan Ferguson added another two scores from play to reduce the deficit to just one point at 0-6 to 0-5. The home side managed to reassert themselves via a placed ball from Seamus Quigley while Sean Quigley added a point from play.
A high ball into the Roslea goalmouth on 48minutes seen Ian Corrigan fouled and despite penalty appeals by Belcoo, referee Noel Davis awarded a 14yard free kick which Ronan Ferguson tapped over to leave it 0-8 to 0-6.
Belcoo goalkeeper James McGrath then made a superb save after an attempted point from Sean Quigley had struck the post and rebounded to the unmarked Niall Beagan, Beagan’s powerful shot was blocked by McGrath but from the resulting 45, Seamus Quigley’s attempt dropped short only for Sean Quigley to flick it on and over the bar with his fist.
Seamus Quigley added a good score from play to extend Roslea’s lead to 5 but Jonathan Feeley knocked over a close range free. With 3minutes remaining Belcoo produced a swift exchange of passes around the middle third before Niall Leonard fed Shane McCabe who bore down on goal sidestepped the last defender only for Boyle to deny him a goal with an outstretched right boot and with it went Belcoo’s faint hopes of snatching something from the game.
Roslea added a 12th point to secure a 5point win and with other results going for Roslea and against Belcoo it leaves Roslea on top and Belcoo back on the bottom. Next week Belcoo have a double header of Senior games. On Friday evening they have a home game a to 7.30pm against Lisnaskea while on Sunday they make the short trip to Garrison to face Devenish for a 3.30pm throw in.
