SENIORS DRAW IN GARRISON

Box Score

Jul. 24, 2011

SENIORS: Devenish 1-7 v 0-10 Belcoo

Belcoo played out a draw with neighbours Devenish on a splendid summer’s afternoon in Garrison. Belcoo dominated the majority of the game and had got themselves into a comfortable position only to see Devenish fight back and take a two point lead into the closing stages. Two late points from wing forward Paul McGrath ensured both sides finished with a point apiece.

The game was slow to get going as the final ball from both sides failed to find its intended target. It wasn’t until the 8th minute when Terry O’Flanagan cut in from the left wing to opening the scoring for the home side. Paul McGrath responded with a score from play on the right wing and Ronan Ferguson added finished a neat move with a score from the left side.

The game stayed at 0-2 to 0-1 for a long period before Ferguson was again on target from play. Joe O’Brien matched Ferguson’s score to leave only a point between the sides after 20minutes. Belcoo’s Shane McCabe was getting on a lot of ball while Ryan Leonard was feeding good ball inside. Jonathan Feeley got on the end of a McCabe pass to fire over from an extremely acute angle while Niall Leonard advanced forward from centre back to screw over a long range score after a neat interchange between McCabe and McGrath. HALF TIME: Devenish 0-2 v 0-5 Belcoo

Belcoo picked up where they left off in the first half. Sean McNulty, Eoin Leonard and Shane McCabe were seeing plenty of the ball and after a sustained period of attacking play that failed to yield a score, Paul McGrath eventually raised the white flag with a long range point from play to extend Belcoo’s lead to four. McGrath then had a great chance for a goal which may have left Devenish with too much to do. Shane McCabe played a defense splitting pass which McGrath collected and his attempt at goal struck the under side of the bar and bounced out. In the incusing scramble, Belcoo won back possession and Gavin Leonard registered a point from distance to leave it 0-7 to 0-2.

Following this let off Devenish came into the game more, they produced their best period of play and having turned numerous balls in the middle third they began chipping away at Belcoo’s lead. Chris O’Brien hit two frees which sandwiched a Terry O’Flanagan point from play, while substitute Ciaran Mulrone also added a score. Shane McCabe managed a point from a Belcoo breakaway but another Devenish substitute Ruairi Doherty reduced the deficit to just one point at 0-8 to 0-7.

Devenish hit the front with a goal from Joe O’Brien on the 52minutes, a Belcoo attack broke down and after intercepting the ball Vincent O’Brien carried the ball forward before launching a high ball over the top into Joe O’Brien who made no mistake when one on one with James McGrath in the Belcoo goals.

Belcoo now faced the prospect of losing a game they had led for a long time but they managed to regroup and Paul McGrath knocked over a 45 before he added a close range point from play to level matters at 1-7 to 0-10. In the dying moments, Jonathan Feeley had a shot blocked by Colm Burns and the loose ball was worked over to Ronan Ferguson who also saw an attempt for a point blocked by Barry Mulrone and upon this block referee Niall Cullen called a halt to proceedings.
