This was a tight game throughout with the sides level on a number of occasions but a Derrygonnelly goal 8minutes into the second half against the run of play stunned Belcoo. The home said regrouped only for Derrygonnelly to hit a second goal with 12minutes remaining which effectively killed the tie.

The opening period was dominated with points from frees as both sides struggled to get scores from play. Paul McGrath, Jonathan Feeley and Stephen Maguire all registered for Belcoo while Barry McGrath and Paul Ward were on target for Derrygonnelly. Midway through the half Derrygonnelly pushed themselves into a lead via scores from McGrath and a Ward score from play. John Carrigan finished a good move for Belcoo but another Barry McGrath free meant Derrygonnelly held a 0-6 to 0-4 lead moments before the interval.

Belcoo managed to get two late scores to draw the sides level at half time. Stephen Maguire knocked over from the left wing while substitute Philip Leonard landed a good score from distance.

Belcoo started the second period brightly and Jonathan Feeley clipped over a free to give them the lead. Barry McGrath was again on target with a free for Derrygonnelly but Stephen Maguire put Belcoo ahead with a point to make it 0-8 to 0-7.

Derrygonnelly then found the net for the first time. Paul Ward evaded two challenges as he danced along the endline before slipping the ball to Anthony Maguire who rifled the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Feeley and Maguire responded with points for Belcoo, but an excellent point from Declan Cassidy and a score from Ward ensured the Harps remained in the lead. The Belcoo net was to bulge again when a long ball caused confusion in the Belcoo defense and Ward managed to nip between defender and goalkeeper to flick the ball into the path of substitute Kevin McGrath, who simply walked the ball into the unguarded goals as the score board read 2-9 to 0-10.

Kevin McGrath went on to register a left footer point from a difficult angle while another substitute Jonathan McGurn also pointed from an acute angle. A Feeley free and a point from Gavin Leonard brought the gap back to 5points.

In the closing stages Paul McGrath had a good chance for a goal but Dermot Feely denied the Belcoo attacker. Barry McGrath added two more scores while Jonathan Feeley drove over but it was to be Derrygonnelly’s day and they ended winners by 6points.

Up next for Belcoo is Teemore in the Championship next Sunday (7th August) in Brewster Park at 2pm. Derrygonnelly face Lisnaskea at 3.30pm in Brewster Park following the Belcoo v Teemore game.
