SENIORS SLIP TO DEFEAT AGAINST TEMPO

Box Score

Aug. 28, 2011

SENIORS: Belcoo 0-13 v 2-9 Tempo

Belcoo’s bid for survival took a blow on Sunday morning as they threw away a 6point lead with only 20minutes remaining and ended up defeated by two points. Tempo fired in two goals midway through the second period at a time when Belcoo were in complete control of the contest.

Tempo had a strong wind in their favour in opening half but in the early exchanges Daryl Keenan and Jonathan Feeley traded two free kicks each. The first major talking point came after 8minutes when Belcoo felt they should have had a nailed on penalty after Paul McGrath was kicked while collecting possession inside the goalmouth, referee Fergal Cleary waved play on before stopping the game moments later for McGrath to receive lengthy treatment, however no penalty was given.

When play resumed it took a while for the scoreboard to start moving again. Patrick Burns knocked over a score for Belcoo midway through the half which was matched by a Ryan Keenan close range free. Belcoo pushed on in the last 10minutes of the half and Feeley, McGrath and Shain Gallagher all registered scores with Tempo only managing one point in reply.

Half Time Belcoo 0-6 Tempo 0-4. Belcoo would have been pleased to be leading by two at the interval considering they would have the wind in the backs in the second half. Upon the restart Belcoo came flying out of the traps, Shane McCabe tapped over from the right wing before Paul McGrath pointed from over 40yards. John Carrigan added a score from the right wing and McCabe was again on target, this time from the left wing.

Belcoo’s blistering opening to the second half seen them take a 0-10 to 0-4 lead and they were now in control of the game with Niall McGovern and Brian Cox dominant in the midfield sector. Tempo’s Ryan Keenan pulled one point back from play before they hit their first goal.

Belcoo contributed to their own downfall as having stopped a Tempo attack, they tried to fist pass their way out of the defense but got bottled up and a mis-placed pass inside their own 20yard line seen Damian Kelly collect the ball and fire to the net via a deflection of a Belcoo defender. It was now 0-10 to 1-5 and Niall McElroy who was beginning to have more influence on the game fired over to reduce the deficit to just one point.

The home side did mange to add to their tally as Paul McGrath scored a 45 but the tide was beginning to turn in Tempo’s favour as they began to win the break balls around the middle. Damian Kelly landed a score from play before Tempo hit the front with their second goal.

A dubious off the ground call against Stephen Maguire seen Tempo awarded a free kick around the middle of the field and within seconds they had moved the ball swiftly down the field and Niall McElroy was in one on one and his shot found the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar. Now Tempo was 2-6 to 0-11 ahead and they increased their lead as Daryl Keenan was again on target from a free. Kelly and Keenan added more scores as Tempo looked to secure victory.

Late scores from play by Shane McCabe and Paul McGrath weren’t enough and the goal they so desperately needed never came.
