SENIORS: Newtownbutler 0-7 v 1-8 Belcoo

Belcoo secured a vital victory in this relegation battle on a very wet and windy Sunday afternoon in Newtownbutler. Conditions meant that this was going to be a scrappy affair but Belcoo dug deep to hold onto the victory which they lifts them from the relegation zone with just three games remaining.

In the first half Belcoo had the aid of the strong breeze but it was the home side who started well. Brendan McBrien and Ryan Carson were on the scoresheet by the time Belcoo opened their account through a close range Stephen Maguire free kick. Jonathan Feeely hit two scores to give Belcoo the lead, the first from play and the other from a free kick on the right wing.

Stephen Maguire then fired over from long range while a Colm Monaghan free kick reduced the deficit to one point. Belcoo hit the net in the 20th minute, a well worked move involving Shane McCabe, Paul McGrath, Ronan Ferguson and Jonathan Feeley seen the latter break through on goals, he unselfishly fisted the ball across the square to Shain Gallagher who caught and dispatched to the net past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

The game was halted for a few moments before half time but upon starting again Belcoo’s Jonathan Feeley and Ronan Ferguson increased the visitors lead to 1-6 to 0-3 at the interval.

Now playing against a strong wind, Belcoo filtered a number of players back to force Newtown into kicking from distance. The defense of Belcoo was tested throughout the half but a series of excellent blocks denied Newtown scoring from play. Newtown’s second half scores came via free kicks from Carson and Monaghan and in some counter attacks Shane McCabe and Ronan Ferguson managed to kick points to ease the pressure on the defense.

Eoin Leonard in particular had an excellent hour at centre half back while twins Ryan and Gavin Leonard along with Ryan McGovern came out of the defense on a number of occasions in the second half.

Despite some hanging balls into the Belcoo goalmouth, the visitors stood firm to record a precise victory as the bid to remain in Division 1.
