In poor weather conditions in Belcoo on Sunday the visitors playing with a stiff breeze in the first half made the brighter start. Pat Cadden knocked over a score from play and Jamie Treacy added another a few minutes later. Belcoo got on the scoresheet after a quickly taken Shane McCabe free found Ciaran Flaherty in space and the forward fired over. Pat Grue extended St. Pat’s lead but a Paul McGrath free kick left the score 0-3 to 0-2 after the opening quarter.
In the last 15 minutes of the half Belcoo cut the St. Pat’s defense open on two occasions and could have hit the net both times. Brian Cox fired wide from a tight angle after a flowing move up the field. Minutes later Jonathan Feeley disposed Joe McGovern and released Ciaran Flaherty but a tame effort on goal was easily saved.
The closing scores of the half came from a Pat Cadden free while Jonathan Feeley hit a wonderful score from distance and Flaherty also drilled over to leave the sides’ level 0-4 each at the interval.
Upon the resumption St. Pat’s had their best moments of the match and within five minutes of the break they had a 5point lead. First, Gary Maguire landed a good score from play while Cadden did likewise. St. Pat’s then hit the net, a Ruairi McGrade 45 dropped in around the square and Paul Cosgrove fisted the ball across the box to Pat Cadden who fisted the ball to the net past Aidan Leonard in the Belcoo goals.
Having laid down on a number of occasions this season when behind Belcoo weren’t going to do it today. Within 5minutes they had responded with three points from play. Philip Leonard, Paul McGrath and Ciaran Flaherty all registered to cut St. Pat’s lead to just 2points at 1-6 to 0-7. The game was very stop start over the next ten minutes, both Niall McGovern and Shane McDermott needed to be replaced after shoulder and elbow injuries respectively.
With 10minutes to go Belcoo were awarded a penalty as Pat Grue fouled Jonathan Feeley, Ciaran Flaherty dispatched the penalty into the roof of the net to give Belcoo the lead for the first time in the game. This was a lead they never relinquished as Brian Cox drove in from the wing and fisted a point to make it 1-8 to 1-6 to the home side.
Eamon Maguire landed a point from play but Philip Leonard responded for Belcoo with a great score from the right wing. Leonard was to kick an equally impressive score from the left wing to give Belcoo a three point advantage as the game neared its conclusion. With the last kick of the game Eamon Maguire went for goal with a close range free but the ball went over the bar and referee Enda McBrien blew the final whistle to signal a 1-10 to 1-8 victory for Belcoo.
